A Queen's Fall From Grace

or An Upcoming Freshman's Fears but Really Help, I'm Scared

A Queen's Fall From Grace
Alissa Pressley

Every High School senior hears the word 'college' and only thinks of one thing. "I have to be a freshman all over again!" Now unlike many high school freshmen, I had no problem adjusting to high school. I had the advantage of already being on the dance team and on student council, so I knew my way around socially. However, that did not prevent me from getting lost on the way to class.

I've been fortunate enough to make my high school my kingdom. I was the Queen (obviously!), my teachers were my royal subjects, and my peers were my people (well the ones I didn't like were servants). But like I really was the HBIC, in the most humble manner of course. I held positions in several clubs as well as reign class president for three out of my four years. In addition to performing the daily announcements. There wasn't anything I was not involved in. I was even voted 'Most Involved' by my class. My name held some serious weight.

And then one day it dawned it on me. Once I become a college student, life as I know it will forever be changed. I would no longer be able to blame my tardies on painting the football banner. Or walk the halls with my custom made golden ID pass. My kingdom is literally falling apart before my eyes and there's nothing I can do! I will be fresh meat, I am going to finally have to experience what all the other kids had to go through in high school. This entire situation is placing a large dent into my Napoleon complex.

As I enter college my fears include but are not limited to:

  • Being the smallest person
    • Granted I'm 5'2" but based on the students I saw at Accepted Students Day, I'm on the smaller end of the spectrum.
  • Failing
    • I know, what's life without failing. But how severe are bad grades in college?
  • Not knowing anyone
    • Going from a high school where the entire student body makes up roughly one graduating class of college is scary. Will people know who I am and vice versa?
  • Doing my own laundry
    • Don't judge, I've lived a very privileged life as Queen

Subconsciously I'm excited to be trading in my Stinger to become a Cougar. My plan is to infiltrate the kingdom from the inside starting with joining Student Government. As the semester progress, I intend to have to C of C awaiting my beckoning call. Or at least that's what I plan to tell my friends at home when they ask how it's going.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

As an English Major in college, I have a lot of writing and especially creative writing pieces that I work on throughout the semester and sometimes, I'll find it hard to get the motivation to type a few pages and the thought process that goes behind it. These are eleven thoughts that I have as a writer while writing my stories.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
