Dear high school BFF,
It all started freshman year, wandering the halls and looking lost among upperclassmen trying to find where my first class is located. Until I stumbled upon you and after that it was all history. We promised each other to never leave the other behind. From our first homecoming football game together, texting each other to make sure that we walk to the bleachers together and stand next to each other in the crowd. To our graduation rehearsal where we made a pact as sophomores in history class that we will walk across that stage together as seniors.
It all seemed so perfect, we were gonna go off to college for the school year and meet up in the summer and act like nothing ever changed. If only that were the case, we settled in our college dorms, made our ways around the campus and made new friends. Our daily texts about which hot guy we walked past, slowly turned into a "hey how are you" once every 4 weeks. I get it, different states, and different environments shape us into who we will become and forever be as we enter adulthood.
The constant stress and anxiety about our grades and our future in college takes a toll on us as freshman. I am in no means mad, but shocked at how the future really isn't what anyone depicts it to be. We say one thing and the exact opposite happens. You'll never be forgotten, because you were by my side for my first of everything, from my first boyfriend to our first prom to our last varsity game as a senior in high school.
The ups and downs, the pointless fights that came with a side of tears, and the hysterical laughs that came with side pains. It was the high school experience every teen dreams about, but now it's time to move on.
As we graduate college, we'll run into each other five years from then as we're rushing to our jobs. We will then meet up for a coffee date and talk about all that we've missed and all that we remember from the "good ol' days". You'll be invited to my wedding and all my kids' first birthdays. We'll plan a 'Wine Wednesday' with all our mutual friends that we've made throughout the years and have a blast as middle-aged women with a startling career and a fabulous family, that our "haters" from high school will envy. Acting like nothing ever changed, even though so much has happened.
So thank you for being you and staying in my life as long as you did. As we part ways ‒ only temporarily ‒ just remember the things we've done and the places we've seen will forever be ours. Talk about me as much as I talk about you, and I will see you soon my dear friend.
Love, your former high school BFF
