My First Year Of College Was Good, But The Friends I Met Made It Even Better

I counted down the days till move in since graduation. I was so ecstatic to get on campus and start my grown-up college life. After my parents and I said our goodbyes on move-in day and I stood in a disheveled shoebox of a dorm room, I stood there and smiled. This was it, I was completely independent. Until a few hours later when I realized I was hungry and had nobody to go with me to the dining hall. Not to be dramatic but...I cried. From that first lonely night till now, a lot has changed, but the most important thing that happened to me was that I developed some lifelong friendships in people that I now call my family.

So Dear Friends,

I am so thankful that for some reason all of our paths lead us to one another. We were all weird and fun loving from the start and that was how I knew our friendships would last. Not everyone meets their best friends in the first few days of college, let alone 7 of them. I appreciate each and every one of you. There is no way I would have made it through the highs and lows of freshman year without you.

Thank you for showing who you were on the inside from the very beginning and not putting up a facade to try to impress anyone. Thanks for making me laugh, a lot. There are so many memories and stories that I will never forget because of you guys. Whenever I think back to some of them, I cannot help but smile. I am grateful for your open hearts and our late night talks. Having close friends that you can talk to about literally anything in the world is so rewarding and something I never realized would be so important to me.

Doing everything together from dropping each other off at classes, eating meals together, going shopping, or simply studying, we were more than just average friends. We became family. We all were each other's support group as we made the start to our adult lives while living many miles away from the home we grew up in. I will never look back on our time together in our freshman year dorm and not have some of the best memories of my life. I have met so many great people in college and so many amazing friends, but to my best friends from freshman year, I will always be most grateful for you. There is no doubt in my mind that we were all meant to meet each other and enjoy this experience together.

Thank you to my best friends for teaching me to sing, dance, and be silly at all cost, because life's more fun when you're laughing.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
