I've heard it all... believe me.
Now, me being a naturalista for almost three years I haven't had the best or worst experiences.
But stuff like: "Why don't you comb your hair? Do you really put that in your hair? That's too much work." And my ultimate favorite: "Natural hair isn't for everyone."
The saddest part about these statements is that they solely come from the black community (my people). I would like to believe that everyone (at least African Americans) would understand my plight in choosing to allow my God-given hair to grow out of my scalp. But this isn't a perfect world.
The Problem is that after several years of blonde hair and blue eyes being the beauty standard people have developed a belief that anything else is unacceptable. Many people STILL have a problem with welcoming or even accepting change.
I can't tell you how many looks I get from people (both black and white) that stare at my hair! Completely and obviously STARING in amazement (I hope) or bewilderment at the wild and free mane growing from the top of my head. I don't mind folks admiring it, really I don't, but at least speak, smile, frown or something so I won't feel like I'm on display at a museum.
I would also like to believe that everyone is used to seeing black girls walking around with their natural hair. But, again, this isn't a perfect world.
I understand some of us have a problem with new and different things. And change can be uncomfortable. But please remember - you having a problem with my hair (or anything else this world has to offer) is your problem.
