I was born in 1994, which makes me a proud 90’s kid. Anyone else born during this decade will probably agree with me when I say we had the best childhood ever. We grew up in the prime time of computer games, AIM, Candy Land, Old School Britney, Boy Meets World, Bill Nye and Gushers. Although us 90’s kids grew up with the best board games, snacks and TV shows of all time, we didn’t have the best fashion trends. Here is a look at 7 Trends Every 90’s girl wore.
1. Skater Sneakers
Skater sneakers were huge for us 90’s kids; I attribute this trend to Rocket Power. Any brand was considered cool whether you had a pair of Etnies, Phat Farms or DC’s (I owned all three brands at one point in my life). Although none of us have a pair of Etnies in our closets anymore, the sneaker trend is, in fact, coming back into style. But thanks to Adidas were straying further from the skater style and heading more toward sleek.
2. Gauchos
This is probably one of the UGLIEST trends of all time, but I guarantee most 90’s girls owned a pair during their childhood. The only way I can describe them is as super flared capris. Personally I loved my gauchos. I wore them all the time in fifth grade. My gaucho outfit was to wear them with my Adidas sneakers, a bright colored cami and one of those cropped zip-up hoodies from Limited Too. The trend kind of came back, but are now called culottes (like adult gauchos). Personally I don’t like culottes but if you’re trying to reminisce on your gaucho days go ahead and invest in a pair.
3. Soffe Shorts
If you didn’t own at least ten pairs of these then there is no way you were born in the 90’s. Soffe shorts consumed half of every girls wardrobe. They were small, tight, short, basically loose spandex. If you didn’t have every color available you were doing something wrong. We wore these shorts everywhere; to school, to the mall, for sleepovers, soccer practice. Soffe’s were the ultimate universal article of clothing for us 90’s girls and everyone had them.
4. Flare Jeans
Thanks to Abercrombie and Hollister, no 90’s girl was ever lacking in the flare jeans department. There were light wash, dark wash, distressed, any style of flare jean imaginable consumed our closets in our elementary school days. Towards the end of middle school skinny jeans came into play and knocked the flare jeans right off the market. Skinny jeans are definitely the more flattering trend, unless you have cankles. If you have cankles (Olivia from The Bachelor), you probably miss flare jeans.
5. Sequined purses
How did 90’s girls glamorize their wardrobes? Sequined purses! We needed somewhere to put our lip-smackers, pink razor and five-dollar bill when hitting the mall on Friday night. There were so many colors to choose from (especially at Limited Too). I had a silver one so it could match all of my outfits, but pink and blue were some other popular colors.
6. Plastic Chokers
Plastic chokers were for the edgy 90’s girl. They were essential for the emo phase we all went through at some point of our childhood. Chokers are making a huge comeback this year. Personally, I like the choker trend, but I think we need to leave plastic ones in the past and move onto a more modern choker (made from metals or suede). So don’t walk around campus in a plastic choker…we get it, you’re a 90’s kid. It’s time to toss the plastic in the trash.
7. Juicy Sweatsuits
I wish this trend never went out of style. Despite the fact that anyone wearing a Juicy sweatsuit instantly looks like a Regina George’s mom wannabe, they are SO COMFORTABLE! There’s nothing cozier than an outfit fully made up of velour. I think almost every 90’s girl had a Juicy sweatsuit in their closet while growing up, and even though were in our twenties now, I think most still do.
