As a fellow 90s baby myself, you could imagine my excitement when I looked across the room and saw a girl in my class wearing a choker. Yes, folks...a choker. Order has finally been restored – the 90s are back. If you’re like me, maybe you think the 90s never even left. I feel comfortable admitting to the world that every night this past summer was spent staying up until midnight so I could watch the back to back episodes of CatDog. I even feel comfortable enough to admit that I still think Cory and Topanga are the epitome of relationship goals and I will forever have a crush on Leonardo DiCaprio because of his role in Titanic. I wake up feeling a little more blessed knowing that I can (attempt to) channel my inner Jennifer Aniston in peace or blast NSYNC while getting ready. So here’s to you, world. Today, we thank you. Here’s a list of all of the wonderful 90s things that our society has finally decided to re-declare as trendy... Let’s do our best to keep these alive, okay?
Chokers
Finally, something to make us feel like an edgy and rebellious independent woman. Thanks to chokers, I can forever show off my angsty side in public without feeling judged. Let’s take a moment to look at the evolution of chokers… Remember the multicolored plastic stretchy ones that went over your head? Now they’re back and better than ever before. I am currently in a steady relationship with the color black, but these chokers come in almost any color imaginable now. Aside from these traditional chokers from our youth, the solid black felt chokers also make a bold statement. If you want something that says “I’m cool and trendy – bite me,” buy one today.
Overalls
If you truly want to be a 90s chic woman then this has to be in your closet. I envy all the girls who can pull off overalls and still look attractive. Seriously, these girls have a gift. The last time I tried on a pair of overalls I looked like a twelve year old farmer who was visiting her relative’s ranch for the first time. With that being said, I wish everyone the best of look finding a flattering fit! Let a sister know if you find a pair.
Superstar Adidas
If Kendall Jenner can do it, you can too, ladies. I can honestly say that I never thought that these shoes would come back in style…but once I saw Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner rocking them on my Twitter feed, I knew times were changing. Honestly, I’m not much of a sneaker person myself, so I’ll probably stick to the gently used converse I’ve had for four years. To all the ladies who want to spice up their sneaker game, this is for you.
"Mom Jeans"
Shoutout to all the moms that made this trendy. The light wash loose-fitting cut (similar to boyfriend jeans) is in. Finally, a denim trend that won’t cut off our circulation when we sit down or bend our legs. Skinny jeans are still great (unless you’re planning on wearing them for more than 45 minutes) but it’s time to branch out a bit. Expand your horizons – give the mom jeans a chance.
Flannels
Remember when people used to tie sweatshirts around their waist so they didn’t have to carry them? Tying a flannel around your waist is basically a way cooler version of this (seriously, way cooler). This trend makes my life easier considering I will be cold if the temperature is any lower than 76 degrees. I guess that’s what happens when you grow up in Arizona. It was only 88 degrees this weekend and my immediate reaction was to put leggings on and accessorize by tying a flannel around my waist. Call me basic, but the 90s said that this was socially acceptable.
Now that the 90s trends have returned, I feel better about using scrunchies in my hair and spending my nights reminiscing over my youthful days filled with jelly sandals and bucket hats. I don't think the 90s babies will ever truly let these trends die. Too many days were spent lip-syncing "Oops!... I Did It Again" while waiting for the newest Rugrats episode to air to give this up now. Save us the heartache - keep the 90s alive.
