I love abbreviations and acronyms. Or abbrevs and acros, if you will. I use them so frequently that they become common words in my vocabulary. Apparently, I'm not the only one. Below is a list of Acronyms that were used so frequently people began to forget they were originally multiple words. Check them out!
1. Scuba. In the words of Creed Bratton "If I can't scuba, then what's this all been about?" Well now you can scuba, since you're about to learn what it stands for. Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus.
2. Snafu. This one I was really surprised by. Snafu is actually military slang. It stands for Situation Normal: All F***** Up. Who knew?
3. Laser. This one is way more sophisticated than the above. It stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission.
4. Radar. Another one from the military. Radar in my opinion should be RDAR. You'll see what I mean in a second. Radar is an acronym for RAdio Detection and Ranging
5. Base Jumping. You know base jumping? That super scary thing you would never try? Well have you ever questioned where the word the base comes from? It is actually an acronym for the things you can jump off of, which are: building, antenna, span, and earth.
6. Care Package. This one would make sense even if it wasn't an acronym. You send someone you love something to show you CARE. But would it be on this list if it wasn't an acronym? NO! It stands for Cooperative for Assistance and Relief Everywhere. It is actually trademarked by the humanitarian organization who started giving them.
7. Geico. I'm sure you know that Geico can save you 15% or more on car insurance, but did you know that Geico is not a word. It is a string of letters representing Government Employees Insurance Company.
8. Taser. Only some Tasers look like guns so this one struck me as strange at first glance. Taser actually stands for Thomas A. Swift's Electric Rifle.
9. YAHOO! Your probably saying YAHOO! by now, at all of this new knowledge you're acquiring. But, did you know that YAHOO! stands for Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle?
