Coming back to school in the fall is one of the best times of the year for college students. Some get to tell stories about the continents they travelled, while the rest of us tell exhilarating (yawn!) tales of our unpaid internships and babysitting. No matter how you spent your summer, there’s one thing that you will always bring back with you every fall semester — procrastination.
Yes, I'm talking about that 2 a.m. let’s order a pizza instead of writing this paper sort of procrastination. College kids are all too familiar with putting assignments off until the last minute and somehow getting them turned in on time. We all know that BuzzFeed, StumbleUpon and even Pinterest can keep our interest for hours when we should be working on something else. After searching the armpits of the Internet, I was able to create a list for all of you procrastinators out there who need some new sites to surf.
I hope you enjoy these sites half as much as I enjoyed “researching” them.
1. Drinkify.org
FOMO is a real thing, and we’ve all experienced it. I think we can all agree that one of the worst kinds of FOMO is when all of your friends are at the bar throwing back rum & Cokes and tequila sunrises, while you're stuck inside finishing a four-page paper for one of your gen eds. Well, Drinkify is here to fill that void of loneliness and boredom by helping you choose a drink of choice, depending on what music you listen to. Just type in the artist and mix up the drink that is suggested. This will undoubtedly have you changing your song to see what else you can be drinking before you pass out on your laptop. Procrastinate responsibly.
2. WonderHowTo
Have you ever wondered how to do something? I’m sure you have. Well, that something is probably on this website. There are plenty of tutorials on how to effectively flirt with the opposite sex if you've been striking out lately, and if you've been wondering how to make a blowdart out of a drinking straw, don’t worry. They have you covered! Seriously, there is a tutorial for about anything on this website. Surfing the site could have you learning how to start a fire on a camping trip or how to cook a nice peach cobbler that won’t taste nearly as good as your grandma’s. You can even find a video about making homemade dog treats for the pet you’re hiding in your apartment complex.
3. Freerice.com
Not only will this serve as a great way to put off all of your responsibilities, it’ll make you feel smart, and you'll be helping the fight against world hunger. Each answer you get correct will result in the donation of 10 grains of rice. That may not sound like a lot, but if you're really looking to spend a good amount of time forgetting about your responsibilities, imagine the mountain of rice that you could accumulate!
4. Sporcle.com
For those of you that love trivia and games, this site is for you. It’s a million times more extensive than Free Rice. I've personally spent hours on this site trying to name as many Denzel Washington movies that I can remember, failing at naming the 50 state capitals and even trying my luck at some OITNB trivia. Sporcle offers trivia for about anything in the world: sports, history, entertainment and anything in between. Dare I say it, but it’s like Trivia Crack ... *puts on cool sunglasses and looks into the sunset* ... on crack. So, put down your study-guide and test your knowledge on something that won’t show up on that exam tomorrow.
5. StraightWhiteBoysTexting.tumblr.com
This Tumblr site goes best with a bowl of popcorn or large pizza as you read through these hilarious texts, direct messages and any other form of cyber connection straight white boys can get their hands on. I seriously didn’t know my demographic was this bad (and just outright horrific) when talking to females. I’m not entirely sure how I found this website, but it quickly turned into one of my favorites. Not only can you spend an hour or two on this website reading the awful dialog, you could spend your time sending in screenshots from that boy you met at the bar that texted you at 4 in the morning. Clearly a great way to waste time.
6. Shutupandtakemymoney.com and thisiswhyimbroke.com
OK, these are actually two separate websites, but they serve the same purpose. What better way to procrastinate than to buy useless stuff on the Internet? You might think that it sounds silly, but spending $6 on a star projector is a very reasonable purchase when you're putting off an assignment. There are hundreds of things on these websites that you want, but you just don't know it yet. Some of my favorite items include the wall safe that is disguised as an outlet, shark fin ice cubes (yes it looks like Jaws is swimming in your drink) and an LED light to attach to your faucet when you're washing dishes.
Useless Web is what would happen if StumbleUpon got stoned on a Monday night. All you do is click a button and it takes you to a useless website. Some of the ones I have come across range from a cute Pug licking your computer screen to a website where you can slap a man in the face with a fish. If you’re looking for some brain-numbing websites for one last stand before starting your online quiz, this is your best bet.
Honorable Mention: Weavesilk.com
I wasn't going to include this one but, ironically, when I visited the site, I found myself procrastinating my research on procrastination. This website is perfect for getting lost in the computer screen as you try to make sense of the drawings that you can make. Art majors will love this. The rest of us should probably stick to some old-fashioned coloring books for distraction.
So, there it is. When you go back to college this fall, remember to have a little study break every now and then.
