Thank goodness! They've finally set a release date for "Wicked," the Broadway phenomenon, to hit movie theaters. The long awaited news of a release date is finally here. Mark your calendars now for December 20, 2019.
Some good news for those who are fans of the show, the cast hasn't been set yet. Don't fear though, the lyricist from the original show, Stephen Schwartz, will be working with writer Winnie Holzman. They were both involved with the creation of the Broadway show in the beginning. Not just that, but Stephen Daldry is set to direct and Marc Platt, who assisted in the production of "Into the Woods," will produce the movie.
But, what are you supposed to do until December 20, 2019? Don't worry, I've got a few suggestions for you.
1. Go see the Broadway show
Either you've seen it and you're dying to see it again, or you've never seen it and you want to. If you don't know if you want to, you probably should anyway. It's pretty great. If you're not able to get up to New York to see it at the Gershwin Theater, don't forget that they're on a national tour right now too! You never know, the magic might be in your town next.
2. Listen to the Original Broadway Soundtrack
Preferably on repeat, if at all possible. And if you happen to sing all of the songs at the top of your lungs, I won't complain. Your upstairs neighbors, your roommate, or your parents might, but I certainly won't. "Defying Gravity" is totally worth belting. Plus, the original soundtrack has Idina Menzel, Kristin Chenoweth, and Leo Norbert Burtz and some other beautiful voices to listen to.
3. Listen to other Wicked inspired music
If you ever got tired of listening to the soundtrack (which you probably didn't, because who could get tired of that music, right?), there are some fantastic songs out there based on and inspired by Wicked. For exampe, Nick Pitera and Peter Hollens did this fantastic Wicked Medley that I always find myself singing over and over again. There are two versions, so make sure to listen to both! Then check out all the other artists out there!
4. Plan your midnight premiere outfit
If you can dress up to go to Harry Potter premiers, you best believe that we'll be dressing up to see Wicked. If you're going as Elphaba, you'll want to decide just how green you want to be the next morning. If you're going as Galinda, you need to figure out how big your dress will be and consequently how much room you'll need in personal space. If you want to be a flying monkey, start making your wings now to make them as lifelike as possible!
5. Read the book the musical is based on
Believe it or not, this musical is actually based on a book by Gregory Maguire! It's called "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West". If you've already read it, feel free to read it again! If you have friends who want to read it too, you could even make a book club out of it or something like that!
6. Read the books that follow Wicked in the Maguire series
I didn't know this and I was terribly excited to discover that Wicked is in fact part of a series called "Wicked Years". Consequently, there are more books that follow the first in the series! The second book is "Son of a Witch," followed by "A Lion Among Men", and concluding with "Out of Oz." For fans of the show that happen to be bookworms too, this is worth checking out!
7. Look at merchandise online or on Etsy
Of course, the show merchandise is always incredible. I love the shirt that I got from there. But the thing is, it's super expensive sometimes so I couldn't buy all that I wanted to. Now, since I've gotten a little more money, I could totally get another "Wicked" shirt. Or, I could look on Etsy and see all the cute little trinkets that people have made for "Wicked." Some of them are really nice too!
8. Play the Wicked game on your cell phone or tablet
Yes, they do in fact have a mobile game that you can play that's inspired by Wicked. I love it because it walks you through the musical. You play one level and then get to see a little bit more of a scene from the show. Not live action, it's all animated. It's like the "Free Fall" games that came out from Disney! Available from the 'App Store' and the 'Google Play Store'.
9. Get involved in theater
If you want to feel closer to the magic, look into getting involved with theater! You could offer to volunteer for a local performing arts theater, audition for a role in a local show, or even work backstage at a show. It's not necessarily that straight forward, but if you're interested definitely look into it! I did theater in high school and I loved every minute of it.
While none of these will make the days pass any faster, they might help make it seem faster as we get closer and closer to December 20th, 2019. Just think: Only 183 more weeks until it's here!
