9 Truths Of A Family Vacation Every College Student Knows

Ah, family vacation. I think it can be agreed upon that these vacations are both relaxing and challenging. As a child, they were filled with simple trips to Disney World and hanging out at the pool. Now that you're in college, a few things have changed while some things are exactly the same. Here are 9 truths about going on vacation with your family as a college student.

1. You rely on Mom for everything

Sure, you're almost completely independent now. But on vacation, mom is always at the ready with sunscreen, water, snacks and more. She is, without a doubt, the key to survival.

2. You're constantly embarrassed by your family in public

It's almost as if they do it just to torment you and you just have to stand there and endure it.

3. You are yelled at for being on your phone

When you're with friends, it's a game of "who can get the wi-fi password first." With family, its a completely different story. Glance down once and prepare to get barked at for "missing out on life."

4. You've conveniently left your wallet at home

Thank goodness the 'rents are treating you to a meal (or like 14). It's quite refreshing to order a meat item off the menu without your bank account hitting the red.

5. Drinking with your parents is a blast but it's also weird

Traveling below the equator with your family blurs the line between parent and kid when it comes to an ice cold drink on the beach. No more Shirley Temples and plain Coca-Colas. Is that my Mom on the dance floor?

6. Staying up late is difficult

At school, 2:00 AM is early to call it quits. When you're with the rents, somehow by 10:00 PM crawling into bed sounds magical.

7. Family games reach a new level of intensity

Game night on vacation is like the world series of family games. You're relaxed, soaking up some sun and out for blood when it comes to a little family competition.

8. Fighting is a daily activity

Where do we want to eat? What do we want to do? Who stole my phone charger? There's no way around the infinite family tussles whilst on vacation.

9. You wouldn't have it any other way

Sure, okay, yes, it would be fun to go on vacation with friends. But nothing beats having the opportunity to travel with your family.

As the adult world quickly approaches, the time for family vacations begins to dwindle. They may be loud, obnoxious and strange, but hey--they're family.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
