9 Things You Know To Be True If You're From A Small Town

Because who doesn't love a small town?

I don't know about you, but my hometown in California has a population of maybe 10,000 people on a good day. Whether it's your favorite restaurant or quirky little coffee shop, there is something about your small town that always brings you back. Being from a small town has its pros and cons, that's for sure, but here are just a few that come to mind.

1. Everyone knows everyone.

Nope, sorry, you're just from a small town. If you're lucky, there might be a few schools in your hometown so you have the luxury of not seeing everyone in your hometown every day. Regardless though, everyone knows everyone and it can get kind of annoying.

2. Everyone knows your business.

Let's face it, when you're from a small town, there's not much to do. That one girl who got in trouble in high school? You probably knew her. And that one guy who did that one thing? Yeah, you probably know him, too.

3. Nothing stays open late.

Coffee shops, restaurants, and boutiques in your town probably all close around 6 p.m., right? Small towns cater to retired people, let's be honest, and for us young teens, there's no where to really hangout past dinnertime.

4. You're bored literally all of the time.

There's maybe a total of three restaurants and two coffee shops in your hometown, and it gets pretty monotonous when you keep going to the same places.

5. Your high school graduating class was minuscule.

Maybe a couple hundred if you go to the public school, but if you're like me, you only walk with about 60 kids.

6. You have a literal 'main street.'

If your hometown is anything like mine, there is literally one street that we call downtown (or Main Street) and it has about two restaurants, an ice cream shop, and seven extremely overpriced art galleries and boutiques.

7. Your town hosts small festivities that are specific to where you live.

Whether its 4th of July or celebrating some random holiday, your town has got to make sure to include activities for kids, families, dogs, you name it.

8. You grew up wanting to leave.

If I had a penny for every time I said I couldn't wait to leave my small town, my parents would be rich (like, Bill-Gates rich). Your plan was to move away right after you finished high school and go to college somewhere far away and never come back.

9. But you can never stay away for long.

There is something unique and special about your quirky little town. If it's not walking into your favorite brunch place and having them know your order automatically, or that cute coffee shop who knows how to make your coffee just right, your small town will always find a way to bring you back.

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter

It's not all morning coffees and singing along to the radio.

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter

I've been in college for four years now. I spent half my time as a commuter and half as a resident so I've experienced both sides of the housing spectrum. One thing I've learned comparing the two is that my struggles as a commuter far outweigh anything I went through while living on campus. Commuters have to deal with the problems school brings along with a slew of other issues; I've filled up my gas tank in the worst kind of weather conditions and napped in random places in public more times than I'm proud to say of. This is a list of some of the most challenging aspects of being a commuter.
