I have been living in a fraternity house these past two months and it has been an ~interesting~ experience to say the least. So here are some of the thoughts I have about my current living situation
1. Everything is gross
Combining an old family house with an all-male set of residents doesn’t exactly make for the nicest living conditions. Even with all the cleaning being done, there is still that layer of filth that just won’t go away.
2. This many people can’t share a kitchen
Sharing a kitchen means sharing kitchen chores and shared chores just make people sloppier. Just wash your dishes!
3. I may be an extrovert, but this many roommates is painful
To be fair, I do actually like all four of my roommates, but putting five women in a room means putting five women’s-worth of stuff in said room. It gets a little cramped at times.
4. Fraternities do parties very last minute
The chapter I am living with threw a pretty amazing Fourth of July barbecue, but for some reason didn’t think to start cleaning their sloppy first floor into the day of. At least the guy in charge of cooking was doing his prep work ahead of time.
5. You miss having your own space
Upperclassmen at my school get their own rooms, so moving from that to a five-pack room was not at all exciting.
6. The house manager has the worst job
I would never want that job. Having to tell a house full of slovenly people to pick up after themselves seems a lot like being a glorified* nanny. No thank you.
*According to the real house manager, this is in no way a glorified job. It, in reality, does suck.
7. Its not always worth the cheaper rent
So many bugs. I hate bugs. Please get me out of here. I know the rent was cheap and that’s why I shall continue to suffer through, but I cannot wait to get back into campus housing.
8. How are fraternity and sorority houses so different?
All the sorority houses I’ve visited are nice and clean and pretty, but fraternity houses *laughs* are probably closer to pig sties then actual living accommodations.
9. Living with other Greeks is really fun
Being able to bring up something on a Greek Life-focused website and have other people in the room laugh at the joke you're trying to make is a real joy. My own chapter doesn’t have a real house, so this summer gave me a taste of what it is like to live with other Greeks. Though the house is a bit gross, the people I live with are some of the best housemates ever.
