9 Thoughts Every College Student Has After Move-In Day

Sometimes moving in can feel like the hardest part of college.

9 Thoughts Every College Student Has After Move-In Day
Laura Avdakov

1. Thank God this thing is finally over

Moving things up and down far too many flights of stairs because you're too impatient to wait for the elevator with everyone else, only to come in and have to arrange everything just the way you want, makes for a long day. One of the best parts of the day is when you finally get to relax.

2. I can't believe my mom cried

I'm just going away to college, I'm not dying, and I'll be back eventually. There was no reason for her to sob over talking about my class schedule with my roommate.

3. Or I can't believe my mom didn't cry

You really thought she would sob hysterically, but she made it throughout the whole day without even tearing up. You can't believe that she actually surprised you with this one, but she did.

4. How am I supposed to meet people in this dorm?

Move In Day is hectic; you might say hi to a few people on your floor, but for the most part, everyone is concerned about where their stuff is going to fit and saying goodbye to their parents more so than pausing everything to meet new people. When the floor meeting happens you'll "meet" everyone through the form of ice breakers. Also, leave your door open and talk to the people whose rooms you walk past with open doors.

5. Where is the best/closest/fastest place to eat?

After all the moving you've done, you're going to be hungry. If you're new to campus, it's hard to know what's best to eat and sometimes even what's open when. If you're coming back to campus, then it's probably back to your favorite place that you've missed while back home.

6. Why did I bring so much stuff?

As soon as you thought you were done unpacking, there was another bag and another 20-somethings that needed a place. What are the odds you'll use everything you brought? Unlikely, but you before you moved out thought you needed it, so it's crammed somewhere in your dorm now.

7. I brought all this stuff and I still forgot something. How!?

Not only is your room a mess, you're still wanting to put more things in it, and you realize you left something important at home. This year I managed to forget to bring enough hangers, which you would think would be a priority with how many bags of clothes I brought. Moral of the story: no matter how much you pack, or how much of an over packer you are, something will always be forgotten.

8. How am I going to live in such a small place for 8 months?

The dorm room barely holds you and your roommate's stuff, and somehow you're also supposed to live in here? It's a little bit of a struggle, but by the end of the year it'll be your home, and you won't want to leave.

9. It feels so good to be on my own.

Whether it's your first year away from home, or you're just moving back out after summer, there's nothing quite like the feeling of being able to do what YOU want without your parents judging you for what you chose to do. It's your college experience. Live it!

Move In Day is highly stressful, but it's definitely an experience that leads to great things, like another school year at the Ohio State University.

10 Signs You Work In A Restaurant

There's always chaos in the restaurant business.

10 Signs You Work In A Restaurant
Brisanis

Working in the restaurant industry is possibly the most fundamentally challenging occupation I have ever experienced when it comes to hospitality and customer service. When you go to a five-star restaurant you expect the time of your life, a two hour getaway, a walk through another time period (rustic Italy, France, Spain, etc), or simply a honeymoon undergo. What you don't see are the behind the scenes scut work: carrying trays, polishing glassware and silverware, kitchen chaos, the list is endless. Now, I'm not saying being a host, server, or bartender is the worst thing in the whole wide world, there are definitely worse things. But the fact of the matter is that it isn't always sunshine and rainbows. In the two years that I have spent in restaurant and customer service, I have spoken my share of expletives, yelled at kitchen staff, and dealt with not-so-happy guests. It isn't easy to keep a bright and shiny smile on your face when all you want to do is choke every person who walks near you. Anyone who has spent even two weeks working in a restaurant understands the rigor and stress that comes with it. Restaurant culture is a tiny world in and of itself that operates on its own principles and creates its own society. It even has its own language. The sayings "runner", "corner", and "on a bus" wouldn't make sense to anyone otherwise. My mother and I both work in a restaurant and the best advice I can give someone going out to eat is to treat us like people. Yes...believe it or not we are people, people. Say "please" and "thank you", or stack your cleared plates before a busser gets to the table. Trust me, the gesture goes a lot farther than you may think.

So, if you work in a restaurant, you can relate with the following points. If not, check out how the brain of a restaurant service (or any customer service) worker actually works. See if you can identify any crazy weird habits your friends have a tendency to partake in.

One of the scariest things we will ever face in our life is going to college. Many of us move away to a new town, join new organizations, and make new friends. We are expected to study, have a social life, relationships, maybe work, and be healthy. It seems pretty easy to do, and in high school all we wanted to do was graduate and move on to this next chapter of our lives. If you are in high school, here are some things that you can learn from before you get to college. If you have already been through your freshman year of college, hopefully you can relate to the things I have learned in college.
