I have worked with kids for the past few years and this summer, I get to work at a six-week camp for first- through fifth-graders. We are two weeks into camp and it has already been quite the adventure. If you have ever had the joy of working with kids, chances are you will probably understand these experiences.
1. The strange noises that come along with taking attendance.
Even if you specifically ask them to say, "Here" when you call their name, this time is usually filled with strange noises and phrases. From animal noises to “dab,” basically everything except the word “here.”
2. You could write a book from the things that they say/do.
Kids are hilarious. Some things don't make sense, some are really funny and some are just odd. You never know what they are going to say next, and it definitely keeps you on your toes.
3. Some of the things that you have to say to them.
“Please get off of that broom. We don’t eat food off the floor. Stop poking him. Where are your pants?”
Sometimes, kids lose their pants at the pool or make poor choices when it comes to where they get their food. While not all at the same time to the same child, I have definitely said these things.
4. When they are ready for gym time, which isn't until another hour from now.
"Is it time for gym yet? Are we going to gym now? Are we going outside?!"
Gym time is the best time because they can release some of their energy. (Keyword: some.)
5. Meals are a serious task.
Over 40 kids in a room for breakfast, lunch or dinner equals chaos. If anyone knows of an efficient way to do this without going semi-crazy, please let me know.
6. And so are bathroom breaks.
Don't even get me started on this one.
7. Young love.
Somehow, elementary schoolers have more active love lives than I do. What do you mean "boyfriend?" It’s the first day of camp. Also, you’re 7 years old.
8. Movie days are very, very good days.
Taking a break from the typical routine and having a movie break is good for the little people and for the ones leading them.
9. The joy that you get from your job.
Some days can be tough, but amidst all the craziness, there is so much joy in working with kids. Nothing compares to their silly stories, hugs and hearing “Hi Miss Victoria!” when I come into work every day.
