9 Things You Experience Growing Up With Only Brothers

Growing up with four brothers and being the only girl in the family has left me with some pretty crazy memories over the years. There's never a dull moment when living under the same roof as boys, and sometimes I seem to forget that not everyone deals with the same things I have while growing up with brothers. Here are some of the most common and sometimes eye rolling (you'll see why) experiences I have dealt with over the years.

1. The toilet seat is always left up

Yes, this counts as one of those eye rolling moments. If you've never fallen into a toilet from the lack of a family members common bathroom courtesy rules, then you probably have never grown up with boys. If you have, I'm sorry you've fallen victim to such defeat.

2. You have a free set of bodyguards

They are your protectors you never asked for but always appreciated. They are always ready to hurt whoever is bothering you and they make sure you don't forget it by reminding you daily. If you have a younger brother, at the rightful age he will assume the same protective nature after watching and learning from your older brothers.

3. You learn to be independent

Growing up my brothers, I've always been told that no man could ever amount my self worth. I learned that only I could create my own happiness and that I couldn't rely on others to fulfill that feeling. I've learned to be proud of accomplishing things on my own and my brothers have continued to tell me how much potential I hold within my future. This has caused me to be more self motivated and proud of who I am and what I've done in life so far.

4. You become the best wrestler

Being prepared for an attack at any time where your brothers could swoop in and wrestle you is what living with boys is all about. You learn how to dodge their attacks and know when a war is about to break. Although feeling claustrophobic underneath the blanket they trap you in can be annoying, you find the fun in trying to win even though you probably stand no chance.

5. You are treated like a princess

Though your brothers can be annoying sometimes and they might seem like they don't care, it's far from the truth. They love to make you feel special and they truly do want what's best for you in life. Not only will your brothers treat you like a princess but you also get princess perks as well. This comes with having your own bedroom while some boys might have to share to getting extra things just because you're the only girl and have to deal with the stresses of having brothers.

6. You are taught self respect

Brothers will constantly remind you how you are held to higher standards. They usually say things like, "No sister of mine would ever act that way." This helps you when making the right decisions and knowing you always have your brothers in mind when trying not to disappoint. They also teach you to know that you are perfect the way you are and should be proud to be yourself.

7. You have someone to go to when you need help

Not the "help me hide a body" kind of crisis, but whenever you know that you need to go to someone for something you can always count on your brothers to keep your secrets. They are the best people to go to for advice when you know it's something you can't ask your parents about (hehe nothing too bad mom and dad) and they also will always go out of their way to help you even if it makes it harder on them.

8. You learn that no boy will ever be good enough for you

I don't think there is any sentence more repeated than this one. Your brothers will constantly remind you of their high standards for your future boyfriends, which in turn will end up increasing your standards for boys as well. Even if you find the perfect boy, be prepared for him to still be not worthy enough for you based on your brothers' qualifications.

9. You realize that life wouldn't have been as fun without your brothers by your side

Growing up with brothers can be pretty crazy, but you wouldn't trade it for the world! Some of your best memories have happened with your brothers along side you and some of your greatest life lessons were learned from the time spent with them. Go home and thank your brothers for all the weird and goofy things they do, because without them you know you would be lost in the world.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
