Things to give your loved ones for Christmas if you’re a poor art student

Since we are quickly approaching the gift-giving holidays of the year, here are some ideas if you are a broke art school student like I am. Feel free to leave comments below if you think of any other ideas you would like to share!

  1. Artwork you created that they can relate to
    • Give them a beautiful drawing/painting/print of something that means a lot to them like their pet or something about their favorite band
  2. Artwork of yourself
    • Your loved ones are sure to love a creative piece of art with you as the subject. Every time they look at this piece they will be reminded of how much the love you and how talented you are.
  3. Artwork of them
    • Another cool idea that anyone will love because they are the subject and you put in hard work to make them a beautiful custom piece of art. Just make sure you make them look good!
  4. A mug that you bought from one of your peers
    • If you bought a few mugs from the mg sale or if you buy one off one of your peers, this would make a beautiful gift to give the special ones in your life. This also helps support the local artists around you make money.
  5. A typography print that tells them how much you love them.
    • If you have a friend who is a printmaking major/minor they could help you make a custom print with words from the heart for them to display.
  6. A free print of one of the prints you are selling
    • If they have been eyeing a print that you have for sale and you care about this person, giving them one of those prints for Christmas would be the perfect surprise for them.
  7. A huge framed copy of your work for their displaying pleasure
    • Who wouldn’t love a huge framed piece of artwork done by someone they admire? What a great gift!
  8. A free commission coupon giving them the decision of you making them whatever they want
    • Give them a free pass for them to commission you for a piece of artwork they want done. This way thy get something that means a lot for them, and it doesn’t take too much time to put aside for someone’s gift.
  9. Read your family a poem after your Christmas dinner about how much you appreciate every single one of them and how grateful you are to have them in your life.
    • This is a beautiful idea because you give everyone all a gift at once and give them a chance to hear something that you creatively wrote from the heart and get them into the gift giving mood for Christmas. No material thing can amount to the sentimental value of words from the heart

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
