ABC's Once Upon a Time is a show that combines elements of the real world, and our favorite fairytale characters like Snow White, The Little Mermaid, and Peter Pan. Season 6 is about to premiere on Sunday (September 25), and it is amazing how the story has come this far. However, there are a few things that the show could do to improve. The past couple seasons have been okay, but it can always change!
1. Hook and Emma need to get married or something already!
The main character, Emma Swan, has broken down her walls and admitted how much she loves Captain Hook/Killian Jones. They have been to the Underworld and back, literally. I feel that if they do not get married or move in together or something of that nature, it would be a disservice to all the Captain Swan fans out there, including myself. Just let them be happy.
2. Let Regina find peace and happiness
Regina was once the Evil Queen, and now she let that part of herself go. Again, literally. She just lost her "true" love, Robin Hood, and now she has to deal with her evil other her. I know, it sounds confusing. I just want Regina to be happy and not let her character development go to waste.
3. Make Rumpelstiltskin the villain again
Also known as the Dark One, the show was just so much fun when he was the main villain. He has gone through so much "will he redeem himself for Belle or not?" phases. Belle now knows he will never change. She deserves better, and I say let him go full Dark One again. At this point, he deserves it.
4. Stick to one plot for the entire season
For my understanding, they are actually going to do this for season six, and that is great! I think they should keep doing that for now on. The show did this thing where there were two plots in each season. It was cool at first, as it allow more characters to come in, but then it got repetitive. It also made some things seem really rushed. I am happy that this season is not going to be split.
5. Control How Many New Characters Come On
Now with each new season of OUAT, people always look forward to what new characters are coming on to the scene. When the Frozen characters came on, the show's viewer numbers skyrocketed. They were only on for half a season though (unless they come back). The show needs to be careful now because it has so many characters. It often feels they shoehorn characters because they have the rights to them, and then other characters are left behind. Like what happened to Cinderella or the Mad Hatter?
6. Make the timeline make sense again
The show started out simple. The Evil Queen wanted to get revenge on Snow White. She puts a curse on them leaving everyone trapped in our world, while Snow White and Prince Charming's daughter was separated and now has to save them all. Now the timeline and who-knows-who is way too confusing. I feel the creators need to make an official timeline or family tree or something now. Sometimes the X-Men timeline makes more sense than this one.
7. Make Henry relevant again
Henry's role has been diminished since season three. The actor is not a child anymore, and they have tried to make his role big again. Their attempts just have not work though. I feel that he needs to team up with Emma again, since I feel their relationship is the strongest dynamic of the show. Well, it once was.
8. Talk about realistic problems in a fantasy setting
Let me explain. This a family show, but they can do things like talk about realistic situations. Our world is scary. Shows like this can show kids that it can be okay, and how to deal with things. I mean Zootopia dealt with the subject of racism. One of the stories I wish they could do is The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The Disney movie itself dealt with themes of abuse, race, and other serious topics. Frollo is one of the scariest villains because of how realistic he is. The show could talk about relevant issues with this story, only if they do it right.
9. Plan for the end game now
The show will not last forever. I think they have some sort of plan of how to end it, but just in case, if they have a plan of how to end the show, it would be better for everyone. Don't get me wrong, I love this show. I would watch ten more seasons of it. However, learn from Supernatural. That show has no idea when it is going to end, and it has done so many crazy things. I don't want this show to be another show to jump the shark. I want the ending to be bittersweet. I want to be sad that it is over, but I am happy on how it ended. A great example is Park and Recreations. It had a wonderful finale, and it had seven seasons! I was sad for it go, but I'm happy it did. Please don't drag OUAT into the ground. Treat it with the respect it deserves.
