Growing up, my mom and dad would always watch movies from the 50's or movies filmed in the present, but that was set in the 50's. And there was always something exciting about seeing the huge differences that exist between then and now. There were times when I would wonder what it would have been like to live during those times and experience the what made the 50's so special. Here are nine things that made the 1950's so memorable:
1. The Cars
Every once in a while when I'm on the road, I always come across an old vintage car and there is just something so eye catching about them, mostly due to the fact that we don't have cars made like that anymore. But can you imagine going outside and only seeing cars like these or better yet, driving one?
2. Music
Music has always been one of the biggest parts of culture and with a lot of the music that we have today, we have to thank a lot of the styles that started it all for us. Every once in a while I like to take a step back from some of the music we have now, and listen to some older jazz because of how sweet and simple it was, yet still so beautiful.
3. Great Famous Icons
Marilyn Monroe, Etta James, Lucille Ball, Elvis Presley, Elizabeth Taylor, Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra, etc. It would be impossible not to know of at least one person on this list. They, as well as so many others, will always be remembered as legends because of something they did that made a mark on American pop culture. There no way that you could ever mistake Frank Sinatra's smooth voice or Elvis's unique dance moves.
4. Going to Diners
The great thing about diners in the 50's wasn't just the great food, but it was also an awesome to hang out with friends while having a milkshake and fries. This leads me to number 6 on the list.
5. The Fashion
I love the fact that every once in a while with styles you see today, you''ll notice that some styles get brought back and some of the clothing people would wear in the 50's is definitely something I would love to see more of because of how beautifully they used to dress and how put together they would look.
6. The Hairstyles
Looking at pictures and movies, and seeing some of the hairstyles from back then, I have to say they were really beautiful. The hair was such a huge part of the look and I don't know how women did it but I know that if I tried to replicate these hairstyles now I would fail miserably.
7. Drive-In Move Theaters
One of the things that I have always wanted to do was go to a drive-in movie theater, which I've never been able to do. That's mostly due to the fact that nowadays it's very rare to you find one, but hopefully one day i'll be able to check that off my bucket list.
8. More Kids Played Outside
Technology has evolved so much and has come in handy in so many different ways, but one of the many cons to the development of technology is that you don't see as many children outside, playing as you would have seen decades ago where kids would go to the front of their houses to play hopscotch, jump-rope, or baseball with their friends.
9. The Dancing
Last but not least, what I think is the most exciting part of the 50's - the dancing. Watching how they danced in the past is so thrilling, and if you really look closely, you can see a lot of their styles of dance have been incorporated into the many styles of dance we have today. What made the dancing so exciting was that everyone was so into it.
If someone were to come up to me tomorrow and ask me if I wanted to time travel to the 50's, my answer would be an easy yes, even if it was just for a day. It's just always been a time that I have always wanted to experience.
