9 Things About School Picture Day That Are Way Too True

What would school be without everyone having terrible yearbook pictures?

There are a lot of things that we wait for during our twelve years of school: our first date, getting our driver's licenses, going to prom, but there's one day that brought equal amounts of dread and excitement. We wore our best outfits and put on too much makeup. The kids that always wore sweatpants put on a fancy outfit and the cool kids tried even harder to make it seem like they didn't care by dressing the part. We will always look back on this day and wonder why we thought it was such a big deal. No matter what group you were in, there was no escaping school picture day, and because of that there are a few things we all know too well.

1. You tried to look your best that day

You had to break out your best outfit so you could be immortalized in style.

2. But only from the waist up

Let's be real, you saw a lot of people rocking dress shirts and sweatpants.

3. There was always at least one person that just didn't care

They would show up in a wrinkled shirt or even pajamas because they were just "too cool" to care about school pictures.

4. And one person that cared too much

The polar opposite of the kid that didn't care was the kid that showed up looking totally different than her regular look, complete with too much makeup and an outfit just shy of a prom dress.

5. You desperately hoped you got your picture taken before gym class

The last thing you need was to get sweaty or mess up your hair before you got your picture taken.

6. And before lunch

If you managed to escape the dangers of gym class you still had to make your way through lunch, and chances are they were serving Sloppy Joes or tomato soup that day.

7. You always ordered a bunch of pictures to pass out to friends

We all had to have a ton of wallet sized pictures so that our friends could remember us forever, not that we'd want anyone to have a school picture as the way they see us for the rest of their lives.

8. But never actually did and now you have 673 pictures from third grade

Even if you planned on passing out pictures, you never did once the time came and now you have a ton of embarrassing pictures and no idea what to do with them.

9. No matter how hard you tried you never got a good picture

Try as you might, you got something on your outfit, messed up your hair, or made a weird face and ended up with a horrible picture. You tried not to think about it until next year's pictures, or at least until the yearbook came out and everyone saw just how bad you looked.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
