9 Things You Realize When You Have Your Own Place

Living on your own is both strange and liberating. As a college student, having your first place is exciting but at the same "adulting" is really scary. How do people do this?! Anyone who has just moved into their own first place can definitely relate.

1. You have bills.

Electricity? Cable? Internet? You'll suddenly find yourself marking dates on your calendar with "BILL DUE". It's a strange feeling to have to pay bills as a 20-something year old.

2. You have to cook.

The whole ramen noodles was so freshman year (and you realized how bad they were once you gained the freshman 15). Now that you have a kitchen, you should probably start to learn how to make a few things. Cereal is my specialty.

3. You have more to clean.

Cleaning a dorm room was easy because it was so small. Now most of us have apartments and houses and that means more space to clean. Having to buy all of these cleaning supplies makes you wonder for a second if you can afford a cleaning service.

4. You have to be conscious of spending.

In the dorm rooms, you could leave the lights on all day and all night if you wanted to. Heck, you weren't paying the electricity bill! Now that you are paying for it, you begin to understand why your parents always yelled at you to turn the lights off once you left the room.

5. You have neighbors.

Don't give your neighbors a reason to hate you (at least for the first month of school). You're neighbors aren't necessarily going to be more college kids. Some of us live in residential neighborhoods which means families with young kids, old people, and most importantly cops. Just be respectful.

6. You need to remember which day is garbage day.

Still haven't figured that one out...

7. You have no money.

Between drinking, eating, textbooks and other hood rat stuff you're probably poor. We're all in the same boat, just struggling to get by.

8. You begin to appreciate your parents (and their money).

Paying for groceries, rent, and other necessities really makes you realize how sweet it was living at home (just for a minute though - you're not going back there). Home cooked meals (that were actually good) and not having to worry about paying bills on time is the sweet life.

9. You'll never be ready for it.

Adulting is hard. No one is ever reading for it...join the club.

Everyone is in the same boat as you and no one really knows what they're doing. So just try not to get arrested and enjoy the ride. This is the time of your life that you'll tell your kids about, so don't mess up too badly.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
