9 Things My Parents Taught Me
Amy Beck

I am forever grateful for the many lessons I have learned throughout my life from my parents. I will never be able to list all of the things they have taught me, but a few things in particular have been on my mind lately.

1. Always bring chap-stick with you.

You or someone else will always end up needed some.

2. If you're trying to get across Logan, take Second East instead of Main Street.

It goes all the way through town, but has less traffic.

3. Potholes form because water gets into the cracks in the road, then freezes and expands.

I asked my dad about potholes years ago and I have never forgotten exactly how he explained it.

4. When properly wrapping a present, you never need as much tape as you think you do.

After years of training, I finally started to remember that the tape didn't need to be any longer than my thumb.

5. When cooking bacon, lower heat is better.

It may make you wait longer, but it's worth it in the long run.

6. Always reapply sunscreen.

You'll never regret it. Especially if you're as pale as I am.

7. Hot chocolate is always better with milk.

It's way better than warm chocolate water.

8. You can do hard things.

My parents have told me this my whole life. You're capable of much more than you think you are.

9. Family takes priority.

Family always comes first for me. My parents have emphasized family unity my whole life.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.

singing
Cambio

Singing is something I do all day, every day. It doesn't matter where I am or who's around. If I feel like singing, I'm going to. It's probably annoying sometimes, but I don't care -- I love to sing! If I'm not singing, I'm probably humming, sometimes without even realizing it. So as someone who loves to sing, these are some of the feelings and thoughts I have probably almost every day.
