11 Things I Don't Want the Guy Behind Me at College Orientation to Know

College orientation day rolled around the corner and my anxiety was through the roof. It was a time for a fresh start. The first impression I gave my new peers was very important. I walked into a room of about 100 people and tried to make friends. It's an odd feeling to be surrounded by people who know absolutely nothing about you but in some ways it is absolutely amazing. I was doing fine making conversation until I realized how cute the guy behind me was.

11 Things I Don't Want the Guy Behind Me at College Orientation to Know:

1. I wrote a song for a boy in the 7th grade and someone made copies for my entire class. In my classmates defense, I didn't really know the boy and he was way out of my league

2. The same guy who the song was about stepped on my foot and fractured it in two places.I was sent to the nurse and she handed me a band aid. (This was the same women who when I had an asthma attack in 9th grade, handed me a cough drop and said to return to class.)I was in a walking boot and physical therapy for two months...I don't think anyone actually believed he was what broke it, but I promise he did!

3. I shaved half of my eyebrow off by accident in junior high.

I found an hair trimmer in my bathroom and went wild. It should have said "Attention: This will not trim your hair, this will shave it all of." My mom had the perfect brown eyeliner to help fix it but everyone still noticed.

4. I fell in the girls locker room, bruised my tailbone, and was escorted out in a wheel chair.

The water was leaking from the water fountain and it all went down, literally and figuratively, from there.

5. I failed my state's math local assessment four times.

After being called down the guidance office to receive my scores, I kept telling myself I'd finally pass but it took me five times to score proficient. I had to take a remediation class and received an A in the course but still managed to fail again that spring. Oops.

6. I drove a dented mini-van to school everyday.

In my defense, my grandmother was the one who put the dents in it and it got me where I needed to go.

7. I fell in love with not one but two student teachers.

I thought my beloved 8th grade social studies studies student teacher was a sweetie but then once I met my 10th grade english student teacher, I realized what a true sweetie was. I learned more in those classrooms than I did anywhere else. (Shout out to MP & BP)

8. I got called over the loudspeaker senior year because my park job was "inexcusable."

FYI: It was some of my best work.

9. I had a severe concussion and had to wear a neck brace to school for a week. Yes I am an accident waiting to happen.

No excuses on this one, cheerleading is dangerous!

10. I was closer with my teachers than my friends.

11. I'm living at home and commuting to college simply because I adore my town and my family.

I think the coolest thing about college is that we as freshman get to decide what our peers think of us. I didn't have to tell that guy all of those silly things. We don't have to make up elaborate stories of fun Friday nights back home or fabricate how popular we were high school lives; we get to be ourselves with no reputation following us.

5 Things To Do That Are Better Than Writing A Paper

Don't waste your time trying to write that paper when there are so many more interesting things you could be doing.

Writing a paper is never fun and is rarely rewarding. The writer's block, the page requirement, be specific, but don’t summarize, make sure you fixed any grammatical errors, did you even use spellcheck? and analyze, analyze, analyze.

Papers can be a major pain. They take up so much time and effort that by the end of the process you hate yourself and you hate the professor for making life so difficult. Questions of your existence start roaming in your mind. Am I even cut out for college if I can’t write a single paper? Am I even capable of taking care of myself if I lack the energy to open my laptop and start typing?

I can barely remember back when I was the only child. Most would say it’s because it is extremely difficult to remember things as a toddler but I would say it's because I was bored until my sister came along. My mother always says how important the "sister bond" is and with every year that passes I realize how right she is. Instead of writing a novel about all of the wonderful things there are about having a sister I decided to list a few of them instead.

It is the time of our lives that we are beginning to enter the adult world and most of us, if not all of us, have no idea what we are doing. It's like starting a video game, but skipping the tutorial. We're all just running around aimlessly hoping we accidentally do something right that moves us along the right path. Now that graduation has just happened, or is right around the corner for some of us, it's time to start thinking about how we are going to take care of ourselves once we are on our own.

College involves a whirlwind of emotions, whether it’s from the stress of an assignment (or twenty), or from fighting with your roommate. It can be overwhelming at times and it’s important to take a step a back and calmly think things over. Maybe gain some perspective.
