There are some days when all you want to do is watch TV all day. Netflix or Hulu becomes your best friend. These streaming services are made for binge watching, which is watching multiple episodes of a show in one sitting or in a short period of time. Everyone has done it at least once, and will recognize the stages of binge watching.
1. Choosing the show.
Maybe it's a show you've had your eye on, or maybe it's a show your friend has been telling you to watch. As everyone knows, this is an important choice. You're going to spend days, maybe even months watching this show. But no pressure.
2. The pilot episode.
It's the moment of truth. You've chosen the show, and now you're watching the first episode. Is it something you're interested in? Are the episodes too long? These are all questions you'll find the answers to in the pilot. However, you can't always judge a show by its first episode. This may have been the episode to get the show off the ground, but shows almost always improve after their first episode.
3. You're confused.
Wait, have we seen him before? What's the main character's name? Where exactly do they go to school? This is the struggle you face when you haven't watched enough episodes to know what's going on yet, but you're getting into the show. You're not going to stop watching because you want to know what happens next. Or see if that hot actor is ever going to come back.
4. You're jamming.
By this point, you know the theme song by heart. When a new episode starts, you're singing along. Even if the theme song doesn't have words, it doesn't matter. You're still rocking out at the beginning of every episode.
5. You're hooked.
This probably happens around the fourth or fifth episode. You weren't sure at first, but now you've fallen in love with this show. There's no turning back at this point. You're talking about it wherever you go, and you're trying to get your friends to watch it.
6. Avoiding others.
You haven't left your room in two days. You've been surviving on whatever food you can find in your dorm room, and you're almost done with season four. Your friends might have texted you an hour ago, but you were too focused on the episode to care. Who needs friends when you have Netflix?
7. Remembering your responsibilities.
Do I have a paper due next week? You emerge from your nest of blankets to check your planner and see the other five things you have to finish before Friday. Momentarily, you panic before you convince yourself that watching one more episode can't hurt.
8. Starting the last season.
You're coming to the end of the series, but you don't want to admit it. You've been with these characters for so long, and the idea of returning to real life doesn't sound pleasant. Now you have to power through. You might take a bit more time on the last season because you don't want it to end.
9. Finishing the series.
You've come to the end of the series (or at least what's available on Netflix). If the show's still airing, you get to look forward to a new episode every week. If the show's over, you have to say goodbye to your favorite characters and move on. Nothing's as heartbreaking as coming to the end of another binge-watching session. Though you went on a journey with those characters and you're sad to see it come to an end, there will always be another show to binge watch on Netflix.
