The 11 Stages Of Being Roommates

You know, maybe these people aren't so bad.

The 11 Stages Of Being Roommates

Living under the same roof as your best friends sounds like a dream come true (which it is). There are only a select few years of your life when you get to live with your best friends before you all have boring, adult jobs and real-world responsibilities. Regardless, there can be a few rough patches in between all of the lovey-dovey, sharing-is-caring, my-closet-is-your-closet fun.

1. The Build-Up

You have just signed your lease. You officially have people who have signed a contract saying that they will still enjoy your presence at this point next year. Cue the “Froomies!” tweets.

2. Preparation

You go to Pinterest to find everything that your apartment could ever need. You have all become frequent visitors of Hobby Lobby in search of the perfect decorations. The froomie group chat is blowing up at all hours of the day with texts detailing what your days will be like when you are all under one roof.

3. Move-In

Your parents all meet each other again and they have to plug their ears as you run out of your U-Haul trucks while squealing. You reminisce on your individual summer adventures while you watch your parents bond as they bring your flat screen up three flights of stairs.

4. Syllabus Week

Your first few nights out together feel surreal. Not only do you get to attend the pre-game and after parties together, but you get to continue the fun on your walk home and while you make that late-night frozen pizza. What can get better than this?

5. Glued At The Hip

Is your roommate going to the grocery store? You'll tag along! Are they headed to the gym? You'll walk with them! Did they decide to go out tonight? Okay, you'll go too. Is someone brushing their teeth? They can't do that alone, can they?

6. Settling In

Each roommate's ticks and habits are starting to get on your nerves. Are they Facetiming their boyfriend again? It's 2:00 in the morning! If they use up all of the hot water or forget to return your favorite wedges one more time, then you are going to scream.

7. Sharing

You forgot that all this borrowing and sharing was the reason why you and your sister didn’t get along so well at home.

8. Too Comfortable

Do they really have to belch out every burp at the loudest volume possible? Do they have to keep their robe on for hours after they have finished their shower? You can hear every cough, sneeze, and dresser drawer opening through these paper-thin walls. When is the next Megabus home?

9. Appreciation

They picked up your favorite late-night snack from the grocery store! You didn't even ask them to do that. And it was really nice of her to let you borrow the dress that she was going to wear tonight. Honestly, let's face it, you would never make it to the gym if your roomie didn't wake up at the crack of dawn with you. She brought home leftovers from her date because she knew that you would like them? You know, maybe these people aren't so bad.

10. BFF

After months of living together, you are starting to see each other as more like siblings than roommates. They get on your nerves just the same as your sister or brother would, but they are even better than your sibling(s) because they've listened to all of your crazy stories about your family and somehow still find them normal enough to socialize with during family weekend. These few semesters of living together are like nothing that you will get to experience in the “real world.” You wouldn’t even trade them for that last piece of leftover Airliner pizza sitting in your fridge (maybe).

11. Moving Out

Forget this one. You can't even fathom this idea.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

There is nothing quite like family.

Family is kinda like that one ex that you always find yourself running back to (except without all the regret and the angsty breakup texts that come along with it).

No matter how long your class is, there's always time for the mind to wander. Much like taking a shower or trying to fall asleep, sitting in a classroom can be a time when you get some of your best ideas. But, more than likely, you're probably just trying to mentally cope with listening to a boring lecturer drone on and on. Perhaps some of the following Aristotle-esque thoughts have popped into your head during class.

Bob's Burgers is arguably one of the best and most well-written shows on tv today. That, and it's just plain hilarious. From Louise's crazy antics to Tina's deadpan self-confidence, whether they are planning ways to take over school or craft better burgers, the Belchers know how to have fun. They may not be anywhere close to organized or put together, but they do offer up some wise words once and awhile.

We're in college, none of us actually have anything together. In fact, not having anything together is one of our biggest stressors. However, there's a few little things that we do ever so often that actually make us feel like we have our lives together.

1. Making yourself dinner

And no this does not include ramen or Annie's Mac & Cheese. Making a decent meal for yourself is one of the most adult things you can do living on campus. And the food is much better than it would be at the dining hall.
