1. The Red Wings are an Original Six Team.
The Original Six in the NHL is composed of the Boston Bruins, New York Rangers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Blackhawks, and of course, your Detroit Red Wings! This means the Red Wing have been kicking ass and taking names since around since 1926!
2. Joe Louis Arena.
Since 1979, "The Joe" has been the been home to the Red Wings. Unfortunately, the 2016-2017 season is the the last season that will be played in the Joe, the Wings will be playing at the Little Caesars Arena next Fall.
3. “Hockeytown.”
Can refer to the city of Detroit or the Red Wings hockey team as 'Hockeytown'. Detroit made it their offical nickname and trademarked the phrase combined with their winged wheel logo, making it authentic.
4. The Incredible Fan Base.
There's no disputing the fact that the Detroit Red Wings' fan base are the best in the league. Whether the Wings are home or away, there's always a sea of red wherever they go.
5. All about the cup.
The Red Wings have won an incredible 11 Stanley Cup Champions. Only two other teams in the NHL have won more.
6. “Born and Raised in South Detroit.”
Nothing is greater than attending a Wings game and everyone in the crowd singing "Don't Stop Believing", the unofficial anthem of Detroit.
7. Looking for their 26th Playoff Run.
With about 20 games left in the season, and being about 9 points out of the wildcard, it's not looking too bright. But 25 years is still a hell of an accomplishment!
8. Deep rosters.
The Red Wings have had and will always have deep rosters that include once-in-a-lifetime players and coaches which that will continue to model their NHL franchise. This list includes individuals: Gordie Howe, Red Kelly, Sid Abel, Ted Lindsay, Sergei Fedorov, Steve Yzerman, Nicklas Lidstrom, Kris Draper, Chris Chelios, and many more.
9. Al.
Since the Stanley Cup playoff game in the 1950's, throwing and octopus onto the ice is a tradition, a tradition of good luck. The Red Wings have since then embraced the ritual and made their mascot a giant purple octopus and named him Al. Let's hope this tradition carries over into the new Arena.
Thank you to the Joe Louis Arena and Farewell.
