Grand Rapids Catholic Central

Grand Rapids Catholic Central High School changed me for the better. The community is so great. I'm so thankful that I had the means to attend CC, and I know that it has influenced my life and experiences. Here are some of the reasons why.

1. Cougar pride. Once a Cougar, always a Cougar.

2. We now have a home football field!

And it is so beautiful. My inner band geek is definitely had a moment of pride when the band walked out on the field. I was a bit jealous, but oh so proud of how far we've come as a school.

3. The education will prepare you academically for the future.

College preparation is something that Catholic Central really strives for, and achieves.

4. Wearing uniforms teaches you to appreciate jeans days, but relieves you from the difficult choice of deciding what to wear in the morning. Basically blue or white polo, a skirt, (or pants/shorts if you so choose) and you're good to go.

5. You’ll have great calves by the time senior year rolls around, from climbing five flights of stairs daily, and walking between three different buildings for classes.

Bonus free leg workouts if you’re in marching band.

6. Seven semester-long classes per day make you learn how to study, because exam week usually contains two or three exams on the same day.

After that, one or two a day during exam week in college is easy.

7. Math class with Sister Robert Ann is scary, but it is so helpful when someone cares enough about your success that she’ll be okay with scaring the knowledge into your soul.

8. Getting out of P.E. credits by taking 2 years of band.

Whoever said marching band is not a sport is wrong.

9. It’s a great day to be a Cougar, whether it be past, present, or future!

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.

Blair Waldorf
Stop Hollywood

For those of you who have watched "Gossip Girl" before (and maybe more than just once), you know how important of a character Blair Waldorf is. Without Blair, the show doesn’t have any substance, scheme, or drama. Although the beginning of the show started off with Blair’s best friend Serena returning from boarding school, there just simply is no plot without Blair. With that being said, Blair’s presence in the show in much more complex than that. Her independent and go-getter ways have set an example for "Gossip Girl" fans since the show started and has not ended even years after the show ended. Blair never needed another person to define who she was and she certainly didn’t need a man to do that for her. When she envisioned a goal, she sought after it, and took it. This is why Blair’s demeanor encompasses strong women like her.
