When most people think of Vermont, they think of never-ending winters full of snow, negative-degree temperatures, the great skiing that can be found up here, or the renowned fall foliage and hiking opportunities of the fall, but they fail to realize that summer is possibly the greatest, and most beautiful season up here.
The entire state of Vermont is pretty much a wonderland of scenic vistas, stunning mountains, and tons of other natural areas to explore, but Burlington combines this natural beauty with urban excitement in a perfect package. A little less crowded, with most of the college kids gone (except for us lucky ones who are staying up here), and with the locals more relaxed as the snow has melted and the sun is shining, summer in this artsy and active city is like nothing else.
1. Close proximity to tons of awesome natural sites to explore, while also being able to reap the benefits of living in an urban/suburban area.
Being able to enjoy all that the rural landscape has to offer within a 30- to 45-minute drive, without having to rough it and go without your Dunkin' Donuts fix or needed CVS is prime.
2. Maple Creemees.
Soft serve ice cream, Vermont style. Heaven.
3. Lake Champlain.
Burlington is situated right on Lake Champlain, so access to beaches, water sports, and boating is at your fingertips. And the backdrop of the mountains combined with the already-beautiful lake is magical.
4. The Beaches.
North Beach, Leddy Park Beach, and Oakledge Park are all great beaches and places to explore, although some are more crowded than others.
5. The Sunsets.
I mean, come on dude, freakin' look at that.
6. Outdoor Festivals.
There is always some sort of outdoor festival happening, at least every weekend. So whether you're into beer, music, art, or all three, there is definitely something for you.
7. Church Street.
Although Church Street, a uncovered, pedestrian mall that spans four blocks, is a hub for shopping year-round, all the open air cafes, bars, and shops, combined with tons of random street performances, and an abundance of people (and adorable pets), are perfect to enjoy during the summer.
8. Burlington Bike Path.
The best way to get some exercise is definitely picking up a bike, which are a staple in Burlington, and heading on the path to get even more views of the beautiful Lake Champlain and surrounding areas.
9. The memories.
**Spending an entire day at Leddy Park Beach, and realizing halfway through that I forgot sunscreen. Well worth it, though.
**Accidentally discovering Jefferson Falls, a cool waterfall/natural area with my friend after getting lost on our way home from Stowe.
With such great places to explore, people to meet, and amazing food and drink to be consumed, the memories made in this beautiful city are probably the best part. I've only been up here for a week in the summer, and I've already made memories that I'm sure I won't forget.
Although I am only spending six weeks of the summer here as I take some summer classes, I am so lucky to be here during at least part of this beautiful season and I believe that everyone should considering spending all of, or at least part of one of their summers living in Burly as well!
