9 Reasons to Love the Beach

Who doesn't love the beach?

9 Reasons to Love the Beach
Katie Messina

As the first big snowstorm of the winter season is about to hit, I can't help but think about warmer times. I instantly think about the beach and all the reasons to love the beach. Here are some of those reasons:

1. Being at the beach means the weather is warm. Although you can visit the beach during the winter months, going to the beach in general is done on beautiful days. With winter approaching, I'm constantly dreaming of warm days instead of the reality of the freezing cold I walk outside to.

2. The breeze when you get down to the water is refreshing. It is sure to cool you down instantly, no matter what the water temperature is. It is actually like getting a breath of fresh air. As it blows against your skin, it's easy to just take it all in.

3. The salt water works wonders on your skin. It clears out any cuts and soothes your skin. Salt water is an easy fix to your skin problems, just don't taste it.

4. The sun. Both a blessing and a curse, the sun give you the tan you've always wanted or the burn you've always wanted to avoid. A little vitamin D never hurt anyone but a lot of it, will cause more problems than it's worth.

5. Wave jumping is a simple form of entertainment. We have all crashed and bit the dust in the water, but we can all admit we laughed way harder when someone else took it a little harder. Wave crashing brings out the inner child in all of us and it's nice to go back in time to the simple things.

6. There is nothing like a nap on the beach. Wave jumping tires you out along with the worries of every day life. When you finally close your eyes while laying in the sand or in the beach chair, you drift off to the sounds of the crashing waves in the warmth of the sun and there is nothing better to fall asleep to.

7. No matter what, there's always something to do on the beach. Whether it's going for a walk, playing in the water or building sand castles, you'll never get bored (and if you are bored, take one of those naps).

8. Not all beaches are the same. Every beach has a different type of sand and atmosphere. Some have the boardwalk, some have rocky sand. Whatever you prefer, it's always nice to go to your favorite beach.

9. When you look back on previous trips and vacations, you'll tend to notice that the beach is probably involved in some way. Some people hate the beach and avoid beach vacations in general. I'm not one of those people. All of my favorite vacations include the beach. Looking back, I made the most memories on the beach or in the ocean. The only thing better than beach memories is actually being on the beach.

So as the winter season is about to begin, I'll be looking back on warmer days spent on the beach.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
