9 Reasons To Love October

Halloween is like the gateway holiday

Calling all ghouls and goblins! It's our month to shine and have fun. I've been watching The Addams Family and Nightmare Before Christmas all year long, but now its acceptable. Aside from the weirdos in clown costumes, not to be associated with us fans and our celebrations, here is why October contains the best 30 days leading up to a holiday.

1. Tv and Netflix marathons

It is now 100 percent acceptable to watch as many horror and Halloween movies your little, twisted heart desires. Aside from Hocus Pocus being reran 98% of the month, more people will appreciate the works of Tim Burton, as they should.

2. Decorating, whether scary or cute.

Whether you're putting up sparkly pumpkins or a very realistic corpse, decorations for Halloween are fun. My yard may be a haunted path of death and cobwebs but my kitchen smells like pumpkins and is full of fall leaves. Shopping for new decs. is just as much fun with children too.

3. Planning costumes

If you're going out in a group, thinking of themes add more fun to the idea of being someone or something else. Even going alone and having the freedom to do your makeup as you wish is exciting. Hello hours of YouTube tutorials aside from my everyday makeup video binging. Its time to get creative, like these guys being a Sharknado.

4. The folklore and stories

There are so many spooky stories that go along with the holiday. From the devil walking with us to the dead joining in on the fun, there are stories that you can tell over and over every year and it will always give you chills. Where's a better place to share these stories than around a fire with friends before it's too cold to do so?

5. The fear

Generally we don't want to be afraid, but the month of October is full of fun, thrills and scares. Perhaps the only month that it's ok to scare each other and that you don't get too mad at others for spooking you. So bring on the boos in the dark hallway and jumping at me in the mask, because past Halloween, the game is over.

6. Trick-Or-Treating

Granted, most of us have stopped this tradition by a certain age, but if you've got younger siblings and they leave their candy unattended, its up for grabs. Plus the candy will be on sale the day after. Who doesn't want free or discounted candy?

7. Carving Pumpkins

What's not to love about picking out the perfect pumpkin and carving it with your friends, family, or significant other? I love the smell of the guts and attempting to freehand my own design on my pumpkin. Listening to Halloween music and making a contest out of who's carve job is best is simple fun.

8. The actual holiday

Possibly the only day I won't care about seeing other girl's booty cheeks because we're all just trying to have a good time. If you wanna be dressed as a playboy bunny, you go girl. I hope you've got a jacket and I hope we all have a fabulous, spooky time.

9. Closer to the other glorious holidays

Halloween is just the start. Then there's Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's. Hello food, parties, and giving and receiving gifts. And a big thank you to Halloween for giving me time to be a freak without the blink of an eye, and starting me off for the next festivities that follow.

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.
