As school is coming to an end and you have actual appropriate time to be binge watching shows, let me just tell you about your soon-to-be new favorite show Brooklyn Nine-Nine. The show is fairly easy to catch up on given it only has three seasons (and it was renewed for a fourth!!), but those three seasons are packed with crazy humor, drama, and a corgi.
1. The cast is incredibly diverse.
While television diversity certainly isn't perfect, the Brooklyn Nine-Nine cast has at least made much bigger steps than a lot of television shows. The two highest ranking officers are African American (Captain Holt being both African American and homosexual), the two of the three women on the show are hispanic (both Diaz and Santiago are the female detectives), the main character Jake Peralta is jewish, and while his best friend is a white male, the only other two white male characters are mainly background characters (Hitchock and Scully). Again, it may not be perfect, but it's a step in the right direction.
2. The show is really not offensive at all.
While personally, totally inappropriate and distasteful humor is actually pretty appealing to me, Brooklyn Nine-Nine manages to be an incredibly funny show without having to target different races, religions, sexualities, really anything. The show's humor is always done in good taste, and creates hilarity at the expense of no one.
3. All the women are badasses.
While Rosa Diaz is the most obviously and outwardly tough, all the women on the show (main women being Rosa, Amy, and Gina) can hold their own in everything they do. They're all smart, funny, yet have very uniquely distinct personalities, all of which are admirable. To put it simply, they're like my badass role models.
4. No f*ckboys.
While most of the white-male cast of the show are often goofballs and regularly make mistakes, none of them are actual f*ckboys. That's right, this is a show almost entirely free of f*ckboys. All the men on the show are in their nature kind-hearted and well intentioned.
5. There is a corgi.
As seen above that is Captain Holt's corgi named Cheddar. Cheddar makes many appearances, and even has his own episode. Let me remind you, Cheddar is a corgi. Enough said.
6. Despite being a crime show, the content always remains very lighthearted.
The show is set in a Brooklyn precinct, so yeah, crime is pretty relevant (real crime too, i.e. drug busts, gangs, murder, arson, etc.). Somehow though, the show still manages to address crimes in a way that's still funny and again, completely tasteful. It's nice to watch a crime show where I'm not afraid to leave my house afterwards.
7. Gina Linetti
Gina Linetti is my soul sister. She's sassy, sarcastic, confident, and doesn't take crap from anyone. Let's be real she pretty much runs the nine-nine. Gina is essentially the best character on the show, and she will likely better your life the same way she bettered mine.
8. Awesome guest stars
The nine-nine is always featuring great guest stars. Craig Robinson, Eva Longoria, Bill Hader, Kyra Sedgwick, and Damon Wayans Jr. name just a few of the memorable stars who have made appearances on the show.
9. All of the individual relationships (ships for days).
Each one of the main characters on the show have well-developed relationships with all of the other characters on the show, and each relationship has a unique and hilarious dynamic. Whether it's Jake and Amy, Amy and Gina, Gina and Terry, Terry and Holt, and so on, all of the dynamics of this show are what make it so fun to watch.
