Let's all rewind here to our toddler days where we all refused to take a nap. We would do anything in our power to avoid nap time. Whenever given the chance now, you know I'm taking my butt to my bed and taking a nap. During the summer I always squeezed in a nap, (sometimes two).
There would even be times when my best friends and I would be hanging out and all three of us would be lounging on the couches and look at each other and say "nap time." And that's what we did almost every time we hung out. And to those people who don't take naps, you might want to rethink because naps have some pretty beneficial health benefits. Here are 9 reasons why you need to add a nap, or two, into your everyday routine.
1. Improves alertness
Taking even a 20-minute nap is more effective than your caffeine ever will be. So take that coffee, you've met your match.
2. Improves memory/learning
Studies have shown in fMRI scans brain activity remains higher in people who nap compared to those who don't.
3. Right-brain activity boost
A nap for 15-90 minutes can improve functions of the brain such as creativity so get your craft on after that power nap.
4. Mood booster
Sleepless night? A quick snooze can fix at least some of your sleep deprivation you might be feeling that day.
5. Stress reducer
Is homework stressing you out? Taking a quick nap can help lower your stress which also decreases your risk of heart disease and strokes.
6. Helps controlling weight gain
It doesn't particularly help lose weight but naps help our bodies stay fit. The desire to snack during the afternoon is to reduce when you decide to take a quick snooze instead of pointlessly eating.
7. Beauty sleep
Fatigue can cause the skin to age and napping can improve skin and tissue regeneration. And we all want to look young for as long as possible, am I right?
8. Helps nocturnal sleep
Lacking sleep can cause you to be too wired to fall asleep when it comes to bedtime. So sneaking in a nap every day at the same time can help with sleeping better at night.
9. They're awesome
Let's be real here, taking naps, in general, are the best. You get extra sleeping time and you don't have to put up with anyone.
Napping is a great way to relax and unwind after a stressful day. And to all those naps I missed as a child, I'm sorry. I should have listened when told to take a nap. And to all the nappers out there, keep on napping.
