9 Reasons Moving Is Actually Terrible

The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Moving Week.

In honor of moving week, let me express how stressful it has been to focus on anything but the millions of boxes piled up around my house. I felt as if this week, I would be most effective if my piece focused on moving, because anything else would honestly be a thoughtless article right now.

1. There’s NEVER enough boxes!

I’ve seriously been to Kroger every day for the past week collecting their banana and apple boxes. Every time I see the produce guy, Jim, I tell him, “this is the last time you’ll see me”, and then I realize I lied again. As soon as I get home, I’m out of boxes within that day.

2. The taking apart of furniture is so sad.

As you are going room to room realizing half of your furniture just won’t to fit through the doors, you have to take apart the same furniture pieces that took you HOURS to put together. Please take the wheel.

3. Then putting that SAME furniture back together, tragic.

It’s no easier the second time you assemble something people, and if they tell you it will be, they are lying.

4. Budgeting in the costly moving truck.

After shopping around and comparing prices, the $100 U-Haul seemed like our best option. See, the truck price isn’t bad at all, but the .99/mile additive, gets quite costly when you’re literally moving to the opposite end of town.

5. Stairs makes things so much more complicated.

Going from a second-floor apartment to a house, we were excited because we “wouldn’t have to pack everything up a set of stairs”. Oh, except we do because the new house has a tall porch that we have to climb up with furniture to get into the front door.

6. The long holds with your utility companies.

At this day in age, who honestly calls the electric or cable companies anymore. I would think that everyone handles their troubleshooting, and bill paying online just as I do. Which, made it insane to me that I held on the phone for 45 minutes to speak to someone about getting my electric and gas switched over. Be prepared, and grab the snacks because it’s going to take a while.

7. At least one thing will be broken.

No matter how careful you are, or how many layers of newspaper you wrap your fragile items in, something will be damaged during the move. Count on it.

8. Cleaning the old house.

The list of requirements to be done to my apartment prior to moving out is crazy. I edited the list to what we actually need to do based on the things that apply, and I’ve considered leaving the deposit time & time again.

9. Trying to get everyone comfortable in the new house.

Moving before kids, is totally different than moving after kids. The first few nights, of trying to get a child comfortable in a new home, are rough. Expect at least one long, rough week of adjusting.

After this experience, I will not be moving again until it is time for me to move into my forever home that I own. Moving sucks, and I hated every moment of it.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
