9 Reasons Javy Báez Is Significant To The Puerto Rican People

Since baseball season is under way, I thought that it was only a matter of time before I wrote an article on one of my favorite players. He has been on the main roster for the Cubs since 2015, and people love him. He is fun and charismatic. Here are nine reasons why Javy Báez is significant to the Puerto Rican people and just about, everyone to be honest.

1. He provides us with gif-worthy moments.

He is literally always doing something that is gif-worthy. Let's throw it back to when he started celebrating with Yadier Molina before he even tagged out Nelson Cruz, in the World Baseball Classics. Or when he miraculously caught that piece of gum during a Cubs game. Or all the love he gives the camera.

2. He is an inspiration.

Just look at all of the success that he has had. Báez was drafted by the Cubs organization in 2011, in the first round with the ninth overall pick. He is out there showing all the people on the island, especially little kids, that if you dream big. It can happen. Javy is an inspiration to every little boy playing baseball in Puerto Rico. He has made it. He won a World Series Championship. Is that not the dream, when you start playing baseball?

3. He is humble.

Báez is probably one of the most humble people out there. He has always remembered where he came from. His love for his family has always been a motivator for him. Now that he has won a World Series, he does not want anyone to treat him differently. He even died his hair, as an attempt for people not to recognize him.

4. He is charitable.

Báez does a lot of work for charities. His girlfriend, Irmarie Márquez, is one of the leading women working with Cubs charities. Both Báez and Márquez are very charitable people and give a lot back to their communities.

5. His undying love for the island.

Listen, we get it. Puerto Rico is not the greatest. Even though Báez left when he was in middle school, Puerto Rico is where he chooses to call home. He has great pride in where he comes from and Puerto Ricans love it! It is where he spent most of his offseason and Puerto Rico did not fail to show him, love.

6. His love for his sister.

May she rest in peace. Noely Báez, who passed in away on April 8th, 2015, due to complications with spina bifida. She is why Báez plays the game. She is his motivator. He plays with a glove that is embroidered with her name. Báez is a firm believer that she is watching down over him as he plays the game.

7. The way he plays the game.

Báez plays the game with a certain flair, that the fans love! He is very energetic and full of life. All of his throws, hits, and tags are just so fun to watch. He has a true love for the game and it certainly shows when he plays the game!

8. He loves his fans.

Whenever asked for a picture, he will most likely stop and take one with you. He listens to his fans stories and really takes it to heart. He relates to his fans, as well. Pretty much an all around caring dude.

9. So, overall he is a pretty cool dude!

What is there not to love about Javy Báez?!

As you can see he brings a lot to the Cubs. He definitely makes baseball more enjoyable, since he is so cute! He is a good guy with a good heart! So from Chicago fans to you, We love you Javy!

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."
