As a college agriculture major, I get questions every day on what I want to do with my degree. Agriculture is an industry and a major that isn't very understood, and most of the time people don't even know that agriculture is a major at their university. At my university, the ag department is a home away from home; your people are always around. Ask one of us or ask us all, here are just a few of the questions that us agriculture majors are asked daily.
1. "So, do you want to talk to plants?"
Yes, I'm an agriculture communications major, no, that doesn't mean I want to talk to plants the rest of my life. Ag Communications majors are there to educate the public about all things agriculture.
2. "Do you have a pet cow?"
Yes, we cuddle to sleep every night! No, you crazy, I don't have to have a cow to be in agriculture.
3. "Why are you going to college if you just want to be a farmer?"
I could write a whole Odyssey article on this alone. I have never farmed a day in my life, but I'm an agriculture major because of the mass job opportunities and advancements. And even if you are going back home to the farm, having a degree in business or farm management is something that every farmer would find helpful.
4. "Why aren't you just a normal business major, it'll help you find a job better."
Actually, it's quite the opposite. Because there is such a shortage on agriculture majors, companies do have to hire just regular 'business' majors, but then they have to be trained to understand the ag industry. Having an agriculture major cuts out the middle work, and it makes you more marketable to find a job.
5. "Why don't you eat at Chipotle?"
Chipotle openly hates on the agriculture industry for producing crops that are GMO, or genetically modified. There is nothing wrong with GMOs, they actually are what keeps the agriculture industry able to produce enough food to feed the growing population of the world. But, since Chipotle is hating on us, we will hate on them.
6. "Do you only listen to country music?"
No, but with guys like Florida Georgia Line, Thomas Rhett, Luke Bryan, and Sam Hunt, I should.
7. "How many pairs of cowboy boots do you own?"
I actually don't own any, but hey, there's always an occasion where cowboy boots could fit the outfit description.
8. "How can you support an industry that kills animals?
Organizations like PETA have tried to shame the agriculture industry for killing animals and not protecting animal rights. But, talk to anyone who has experience with this, and you'd know that it is actually one of the most sanitary and well-kept parts of the agriculture industry. There are so many laws and regulations put in place to keep animals being made into food safe and sanitary.
9. "What exactly is agriculture?"
Ugh, take a class, you're too much.
Agriculture is an industry that keeps this nation going; without agriculture, we wouldn't have anything. Clothing, food, homes, gas for cars, everything comes from agriculture. I believe that every student, high school or college, should be required to take an agriculture class to better understand this industry. Next time you see or talk to an ag major, thank them, they are keeping this nation's future alive.
