1. "And you and I have to make a start. And the best place to start is right in the community where we live."

This quote is from Malcolm X's speech, "The Ballot or the Bullet". This quote is applicable to issues today because a common mistake we make is that we focus on the bigger scales of things. Politically, if we want changes, we have to start in our own communities and local governments rather than on the leaders sitting in D.C.

2. "Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today."

We might complain about school, but deep down, we all know that our education will take us places in the future. This quote shows that although we might want to give up and stop working hard to succeed in our classes, it will benefit us to push through for the future.

3. "I'm for truth, no matter who tells it. I'm for justice, no matter who it's for or against."

No matter what your beliefs and values are, this quote shows how that although we might waver because of the factors that affect the situation, we have to strong in our beliefs. This quote is really important because sometimes we try to alter our beliefs and values so that they benefit our loved ones or harm our enemies and that makes us weaker rather than stronger.

4. "It's freedom for everybody or freedom for nobody."

Unity holds a lot of power. There are so many sayings that show how powerful we can be if we stand together, and this quote shows that.

5. "You and I have been sitting long enough and it's time for us today to start doing some standing and fighting to back that up."

This quote shows that it's time to stop watching from the sidelines and actually do something to take action and make changes.

6. "And until we become politically mature, we will always be misled led astray, or deceived or maneuvered into supporting someone politically who doesn't have the good of our community at heart."

This goes along with educating ourselves. If we are unaware of the reality of politics, we will constantly fall into the traps of politicians, who will say anything to gain supporters. It is so important for us to educate ourselves in politics so that we can stand strong in our beliefs and not easily be persuaded into blindly following others and their personal wants.

7. "We got to unite. We got to work together in unity and harmony."

This quote also shows the importance of standing together to achieve our goals and make changes to benefit everyone.

8. "Stumbling is not falling."

This is really important because whenever we encounter a bump in our life, we tend to overexaggerate it and see that bump as a mountain that is impossible to get over. However, this quote reminds that those bumps are part of life and we have to encounter them in order to be better versions of ourselves.

9. "A man who stands for nothing will fall for anything."

Yes, Hamilton said something like this, but this is just another reminder to stand strong in your beliefs and values because those make us who we are today.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
