9 Horror Books For A Spooky Halloween
AM Reading

I remember when I first came across R.L Stine's "Goosebumps" books. First-grader me thought they were scary but now looking back they are nothing compared to some of the other horror books that are out there. Since Halloween is this month, and I did an article on horror movies, I thought that I might as well keep the Halloween theme going.

Some of these booked have been turned into movies but here's a list of books that are worthwhile either to read for this month or whenever you are in the mood from horror novels.

1. "Carrie" by Stephen King (1974)

King's first published novel tells the tale from Carrie's point of view of a telekinetic girl who was bullied so badly at school that she ends up brutally murdering anyone who made her the butt of a joke using her telekinetic powers and destroying the town while getting her revenge. How many people can Carrie enact revenge on?

2. "A Monster Calls: Inspired by and Idea from Siobhan Dowd" by Patrick Ness (2011)

Siobhan Dowd was an award-winning author but due to passing away from cancer she was unable to write this novel herself; Patrick Ness brings her idea to life with a haunting twist.

Conor who has repeatedly had the same nightmare of a monster ever since his mother became ill finds himself seeing a monster directly outside his bedroom window. Unlike the monster from his dreams, this wild and ancient monster wants something more. But what could it be?

3. "Dracula" by Bram Stoker (1897)

Ahhh, the classic tale of Dracula. Stoker tells the story of Dracula attempting to move from Transylvania to England to feed upon new blood and spread the undead curse with the help of London lawyer Jonathan Harker. "Twilight" gone wild? Or dark?

4. "The Haunting of Hill House" by Shirley Jackson (1959)

An 88-year-old mansion, Hill House is rented by Dr. John Montague who investigates the house hoping to find paranormal activity. With the young heir of the house and Dr. John Montague's two guests, experience different paranormal phenomena throughout their stay. As the four begin a downward spiral and Eleanor, one Montague's guests, are possessed with one of the ghosts in the house, will the make it out with what they were looking for or lose one of their own?

5. "Broken Monsters" by Lauren Beukes (2015)

When a boy's body is found as a half deer, half boy Detroit officers try to solve the crime all while the world around spins into utter chaos. With the killer possessed by an evil force that forces him into turning his victims into grotesque art, how will he be put to a stop?

6. "The Shining" by Stephen King (1977)

Another horror classic from the man himself follows Jack Torrence who works at a haunted hotel but when his son Danny is possessed by "the shining" that allows him to see the hotel's horrific past. But as winter approaches, the supernatural forces begin to have trouble possessing Danny and start to possess Jack. With the hotel paranormal activity influencing Jack to his family, will he succumb to the "dark side" or fight against it to keep his family safe?

7."The Woman in Black: A Ghost Story" by Susan Hill (1983)

Arthur Kipps, a London Solicitor or Lawyer, attends a funeral and tries to settle the affairs of a client. But with his client's house at the end of a causeway he , s unaware of the dark secrets that lie behind it. His trip begins to take a horrifying turn when his stay quickly becomes a series of haunting events by the ghost dress in all black.

8. "The Turn of the Screw" by Henry James (1898)

This classic novel follows the sinister transformation of two innocent children. When the new governess sees the ghost of the former governess strange phenomenons start to happen. While the housekeeper and governess suspect the spirits visiting the children in private, the children refuse to acknowledge their presence of the spirits even though their is some type of communication going on between them.

9. "The October Country" by Ray Bradbury

(1955)

A collection of fifteen horror stories from Bradbury's 1947 collection "Dark Carnival" with four other collections published elsewhere. With stories such as "The Lake" where a man revisits his childhood home while recollecting events when a friend drowned in the lake or the "Skeleton" where a man is convinced his skeleton is out to ruin him resulting in contacting an unorthodox specialist. Bradbury's collection of horror stories is sure to give you a freight.

With Halloween right around the corner, horror books and movies are sure to get you in the spirit for a spooky Halloween.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
