On Tuesday, January 3rd, I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to go to New York City to see Hamilton: An American Musicalon Broadway. My expectations were incredibly high, and the show far exceeded each and every one of them. I've never been a history buff, and could never make it through a 1-hour history class without becoming bored. However, Hamilton sucked me into a trance for 2 hours and 45 minutes, which actually felt like 5 minutes. I've never seen, or heard, history retold in such a powerful, fun, and exciting way. Here are some of my favorite lines from Hamilton that our world could benefit from reading right now.
1. "There’s a million things I haven't done, but just you wait."
All good things take time, and you should never underestimate someone's potential based on what they look like or where they come from.
2. "Talk less, smile more."
Simple, and always a good idea.
3. "Look around at how lucky we are to be alive right now."
No matter what may be going on in the world at the moment, we're lucky to be alive and living in it.
4. "Legacy. What is a legacy? It's planting seeds in a garden you never get to see."
You may never live to see the impact you've had on the world, but that shouldn't make you want to have any less of an impact.
5. "You want a revolution? I want a revelation. So listen to my declaration: 'We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal.' And when I meet Thomas Jefferson, I'm 'a compel him to include women in the sequel!"
*WORK* Girl power. Treat women as equals-- because that's what we are.
6. "I am the one thing in life I can control. I am inimitable, I am an original."
You are you. You control your own future. No one else is the same as you-- you are original and unique. And that is truly beautiful.
7. "Life doesn't discriminate between the sinners and the saints, it takes and it takes and it takes."
In the end, we're all human. No matter if you're a sinner or a saint, black or white, rich or poor; we're all going to die. Make the most of your life.
8. "Dying is easy, young man. Living is harder."
So true, but never really thought about... Life is hard, and we often don't give ourselves enough credit for making it through, day by day.
