Maybe last semester didn't go as you had planned, or maybe you want your first semester to be as fulfilling and as successful as possible. Either way, you're going to have to work a bit for it, and one of the simplest ways to get there is by setting goals for yourself. No matter who you are and what you want to get out of college, here are nine goals you should definitely try to achieve.
1. Learn how to get organized.
A little organization goes a long way. If your room at home is far from neat and organized, use your dorm room as a chance to learn how to sort things and keep a neat space. Also learn how to organize your assignments and other work, because the last thing you need is to drown in confusion and clutter.
2. Don't spend money wastefully.
From time to time, definitely ask yourself, "do I really need that?" Asking yourself that question can save you so much money. That $100 belt may look nice, but why buy it if you already have belts that are still useable? Even if you don't label yourself as a 'broke college student' you should still pay attention to what you spend money on.
3. Don't procrastinate studying for every exam.
Because you know you'll just be miserable staying up studying until 4a.m. Don't make this your study plan for the entire year! We all know that sometimes crap gets real and we're bogged down with a million and one things to do, but aim to prepare adequately for your exams.
4. Go out to the events on campus and be even a little social.
And if you don't attempt to put yourself out there, don't walk around saying that your college is boring and there's nothing to do. There's something to interest everybody if you just take the time to look for it.
5. Try every fitness class at the rec center at least once.
Even if you don't think you'll like it! I met one of my best college friends in a Zumba class freshman year and we've been going to class every week ever since, so you never know what type of experience you'll get out of going. You may find a new love in yoga, dance, or H.I.I.T. plus, it's a great way for you to take a break from studying!
6. Make new friends.
The people you associate with can really make or break your college experience. I know that some people may go to college with the sole intention of getting work done and getting a degree, and I totally respect that; to each his own. However, you don't need a large group of friends to follow you around everywhere; two or three really good friends can make your experience amazing.
7. Cut out the friends who aren't really your friends.
There's no point in hanging around people you have beef with. If you feel that certain people just bring negativity and stress to your life then you need to do what needs to be done and stop associating with them. You'll save yourself a ton of stress in the long run!
8. Get along with your roommate and resolve any conflicts like adults
I don't think anyone goes to college with a plan to make their roommate hate their guts. Conflicts can arise sometimes and if they do, make it a point to handle them maturely -- be straightforward; be polite; try to see both sides of the situation.
9. Learn how to cook at least one meal and make it your signature dish.
Don't try to survive off of frozen and packaged meals during your life after college. You may not have your parents to cook for you, and if you can't make proper meals for yourself, well, good luck...Your signature dish can be grilled salmon and brown rice; it can be macaroni and cheese with a yummy twist; it can be turkey burgers and sweet potato fries -- you name it!
