9 Fun Things To Do This Summer

Hey ladies! Are you looking for things to do this summer? Want to stay busy but a good busy (right?) Here’s some things you can do in your free time anywhere and anytime to jazz up your summer.

1. Read a book

You may have summer reading, but heck! Why not read a fun eventful book before the dreadful 500-page long book report for your history class! There’s nothing better than getting into a really good book! (Just don’t get too attached to the characters!)

Craving a good read? I recommend "Me Before You" (before you see the movie!) or "Thanks for the Trouble."

2. Learn something new

You may have a busy summer, but why not learn something new in the meantime? It can be simple! Like learning to knit or learning to juggle! I know I’m learning a few songs to play on my ukulele.

3. Get crafty

OK Pinterest fans, this one’s for you! If you are like me, you love crafts! (Who doesn’t?) Indeed, some crafts are time consuming and super frustrating, but some are simple and fun to do! On Facebook, I follow a page called five min crafts. I learned how to make a super cool cloud light using only plastic juice containers, cotton balls and Christmas lights!

Pinterest is my go to craft idea place, but if you are looking for more here are some of my fave Facebook pages and YouTube channels of awesome crafts to do!

4. Get together with friends and loved ones

Don’t forget your buddies! Even though everyone has different schedules this summer, try to find time to make plans with your loved ones and your good friends.

5. Netflix marathons (do I smell popcorn?)

Oh summer, the time we all catch up on our missed episodes of "House of Cards" or "Orange is the New Black." I believe there’s nothing wrong with staying in all day and having a movie marathon! Pop up that popcorn, bring out your fuzzy slippers, and enjoy your show!

6. Go for a walk

Walking is not only good exercise, it helps clear your mind and improve your mood! There’s nothing like a good ol’ walk that can keep you healthy and in good mood!

7. Keep a journal

Some of you may already have diaries or journals that you write in. That is why I joined the Odyssey! I love creative writing. Writing is a way to connect with yourself, your thoughts and your feelings. I encourage you to write about your summer!

8. Organization time (Come on, it can be fun!)

Sometimes you just sit in your room for hours not cleaning but finding your old yearbook photos from fifth grade and key chains from your high school backpack! Going through your stuff can be fun and, if you organize it, you can feel accomplished (trust me).

9. Beauty time

Oh, ladies, it is time for manicures, pedicures, massages and facials! Treat yourself to a relaxing day at the spa or at your local nail salon!

No summertime sadness here! Enjoy!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
