Fireworks are a classic Fourth of July tradition… or at least, they were. Sadly, nowadays fireworks are being banned in most major cities because they are deemed simply “too dangerous.” While it may be for the good of the general population, the imposition of this law is a major bummer to those of us who have safely enjoyed lighting off fireworks each year to celebrate Independence Day. However, just because the at-home pyro activities are no longer legal doesn’t mean there is no Fourth of July fun to be had! Here is a list of new traditions to start this year instead of lighting off fireworks on the Fourth.
1. Host a water balloon fight
My family does this every year, and it's always a hit. We start filling up balloons 2 days before in preparation, and we usually yield a turnout of about 40 people- it is epic.
2. Launch model rockets
My dad introduced us to this hobby, and it's stuck with us for years. You have to be careful with these since they are flammable, and be prepared to lose a few because these things can fly thousands of feet into the air.
3. Attend a celebratory parade
Most cities host a parade in celebration of the Fourth that is especially fun for the kids!
4. Relax
The month of July is usually sunny so hit the lake or take a picnic to the beach! You are FREE to do whatever you please... (Get it? Because Independence Day?)
5. Go camping
A classic Fourth-of-July-weekend activity.
6. Use the "legal" fireworks
AKA throw some pop-its on the ground or light a sparkler. It might not be as loud as an M80 or as colorful as a Roman Candle, but hey-it's better than nothing!
7. Watch a fireworks show
If you've gotta have your firework fix, head to the nearest city's display, sit back and enjoy your sweet freedom... (Another play on the holiday, in case you missed it.)
8. Petition to make fireworks legal again
Because let's be honest- the Fourth is way more fun knowing there is an imminent possibility of burning your face off.
9. Just light off fireworks
