I’m a long-time believer that what you put into your body is what you get out of it. Read: you are what you eat. Over the last few years, I’ve tried my hand at herbalism – attempting to heal bodily ailments with plants – and I’ve found several to be simply remarkable.
Quick disclaimer: I’m no expert. I’m not a dietician or scientist. These are just herbs and spices which have proven to be extremely beneficial for my own health and wellbeing.
1. Turmeric
Curcumin is a natural anti-inflammatory compound found in turmeric, and it’s potentially as effective as anti-inflammatory pharmaceutical drugs. Turmeric is also known for its antioxidants (hello brighter skin). Try this recipe for golden milk, a traditional drink from India made to treat disease and promote good health. If that doesn’t suit your fancy and you’d rather just add turmeric to normal tea, make sure to drink it with a pinch of black pepper to help its magic absorb in your body.
2. Lemon Balm
Feeling anxious? Lemon balm has you covered. It’s been prescribed since the Middle Ages for symptoms of anxiety. Sipping on lemon balm tea will just about cure any butterflies in your stomach. The herb also contains properties which aid with restlessness and promote longevity.
3. Stinging Nettle
With origins in the colder regions of Europe and Asia, stinging nettle is known for its abilities in treating insect bites and eczema when applied topically. Additionally, when brewed as a tea, this herb aids in nourishing the blood and cleansing the body of metabolic waste.
4. Burdock Root
This root is known for being both anti-fungal and antibiotic. Burdock tea will help induce lymphatic drainage and detoxification as well as remove heavy metals from the blood.
5. Yellow Dock
While also cleansing toxins and soothing the liver, yellow dock tea can aid in the breakdown of fats in the body. By stimulating bile production, this herb helps with the digestion of fats in particular.
6. Ashwagandha
If you struggle with mood swings, consider trying ashwagandha. An ancient medicinal herb, ashwagandha is known for stabilizing the mood and calming anxieties associated with isolation. It also contains anti-cancer properties and can reduce blood sugar levels.
7. Black Cohosh
For people with periods, black cohosh is excellent in restoring hormonal balance. I especially recommend this for those with PMS or PMDD.
8. Ginger
Ginger has a long history of medicinal uses. Its main compound is called gingerol, which is a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. Brew sliced ginger in some tea to help with an upset stomach or to simply boost your digestion.
9. B12
Naturally found in soil, and commonly in fortified products like meat and milk, B12 is a vitamin which stimulates the metabolism. This means maintained energy throughout the day, a boost in your mood, and an aid in brightening your skin and strengthening your hair. Most of us don’t get enough B12 in our diets, so consider taking a supplement every other day.
