The John Hancock Center in Chicago, Illinois has lost its name and you did not even know!! Now, just like the precious Chicago Sears Tower, their owners are selling off the naming rights to the Center and who knows what name Chicago residents will have to ignore next.
In honor of the Center, here are nine things you didn't know about the amazing building that has lost its name...
1. The John Hancock is its own society.
The Center has apartments, offices and businesses that create an environment where people can work and live in the same building as they shop for groceries. The residential portion of this building is its own election precinct. People who live there don’t even have to leave the building to vote.
2. It’s called “Center.”
Not “Tower” or “Building,” because the plan was to build two of them, but the Casino Club next door would not sell the developers the land they needed so it became one beautiful building.
3. Each X-shaped cross brace is 18-stories tall.
The design is unique, attempting to resemble the crossing of beams on the Eiffel Tower. They are notorious for creating oddly-shaped windows that affect the value of the real estate behind them because of the blocked view.
4. A time capsule...
...at the top of the building contains a piece of the Eiffel Tower5. For holidays, workers in the Hancock change the lights at the top to be festive.
6. Secret Elevators
In the elevator lobby on each floor of the residential portion of the tower, if you push the wood paneling that lines the walls in just the right place, a large door will open revealing the emergency escape elevators.
7. Illinois Supreme Court Fight
Early in its history, a fight over pets in the center went all the way to the Illinois Supreme Court.
8. There was an ice skating rink.
The Hancock Center’s plaza once had a public ice skating rink. They considered creating the bottom of the Center into an enclosed mall.
9. Fastest Elevators
The Hancock Center’s elevators are among the fastest in the world and can take passengers from the ground floor to the 95th floor in 40 seconds.
