Being impactful does not have to entail success, or money, or groundbreaking accomplishment. Impact is about how your existence affects the world around you. In this simplistic context, it is not hard to make a positive one. Not only can you project a positive impact through your outward actions, but also merely through living conscientiously, setting an example for those around you.
Here are the quickest, easiest ways to set yourself apart and make any day an impactful one:
1. Figure out what matters to you and support it.
This is as straightforward as it comes. Whether it's a hobby, a belief, an organization--pursue it. Spend your free time taking part in it. Love it. Talk about it. Share it with whomever you can.
2. Stand up for yourself.
There are too many people in this world fighting earnestly for equal rights for you to sit idly and allow yourself to be mistreated. Demand the respect that you deserve. Be heard, and if they aren't listening, get louder.
3. Nurture your empathetic side.
You don't need to enthusiastically love everyone, but take a moment to ask yourself how those around you may feel. Consider the golden rule in all situations. If you are having a conversation with someone, listen.
4. Don’t settle into a routine that you don’t love.
It's easy to settle; it's easy to let your life be easy. But don't dull your life down if you don't want to. Some people love their day-in, day-out rituals, but if it's not for you, then let your life unfold into one giant chaotic tumble. There is beauty in the madness, and definitely a lot of excitement. Don't let a 40 hour work week or a full-time student status hold you back. Overbook yourself. Be exhausted. It might be the thrill you've been seeking.
5. Always be honest and straightforward.
Life moves fast--don't waste anyone's time. Ask for what you want. Speaking with honesty demonstrates one of the greatest forms of respect.
6. Live your real life in real time, not through technology.
There is a world going on around you! Be part of it! Enough said.
7. Step back when you need to.
Never be afraid to slow down and take a break.
8. Do what you enjoy doing (not what you think you should be doing).
Another simple one. There is no one plan for everyone; no rule book for life. Create your own.
9. Be selfish! (Sometimes)
Last but definitely not least. This is to be balanced with the nurturing of your empathetic side, of course. Trust your judgement when deciding to exercise your right to be selfish, but when it comes down to taking care of yourself--you come first.
