9 Things That College Students Are Pros At

As college students, we are seen as people looking to grow and learn. We are merely amateurs; even in our own fields and we know it. Probably the one thing that annoys college students the most is everyone telling us that we aren't professionals, like that's why we are here: to become professionals. However, while we may not walk around with brief cases or dress in full suits, there are things that we are pros at.

1. Jaywalking.

We can be very impatient and don't feel like waiting until we get to the cross walk to go across the street. We've become very skilled at two things in this: looking for the authorities and looking for cars.

2. Spending too much money.

Yes, we really do need that new sweatshirt at the bookstore and that extra cup of four-dollar coffee.

3. Sleeping.

Got 20 minutes before class? Sounds like a 10 minute nap to me.

4. Procrastination.

Did someone say Netflix night?

5. Scheduling.

Despite our procrastination and sleeping habits, we are actually quite good at scheduling. We know when that afternoon wall hits us so that we can take our naps and when we are ready to take on all that homework that we put off from the night before.

6. Research.

Everything may make sense in class but there are plenty of times when we go to do the assignment and it all looks like Wingdings. Therefore, we are experts at Google, office hours, and the library. We know how to find the information we are looking for.

7. Getting the work done.

We may put it off until the last second but we do get it done. It may take three coffees and two red bulls but it will get done.

8. Picking the right jam.

We have music for everything. And when we say everything, we mean everything.

9. Having the time of our lives.

Our lives may not be perfect but we sure know how to make the most of our time in college: surrounding ourselves with good people, remaining positive, taking those opportunities when they come our way and making the most with the minimum.

See, we may not be professional enough for the real world just yet but that doesn't mean that we aren't professionals in our own sense. We are learning and we shouldn't be put down for it. We aren't all party animals or going to class hungover. We care about our education or else we wouldn't be here. So in case someone tries to tell you that you're not professional, keep these things in mind.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
