1. Shrek

As an actor who played several characters in Shrek The Musical, it is quite obvious that this is based on the Dreamwork's hit Shrek. In the movie, an ogre named Shrek has his land taken from him by a fabulous midget named Lord Farquaad. Then Shrek goes on a quest to rescue Princess Fiona. They began to fall in love, and in the end, they live happily ever after. The musical version has some minor tweaks like brand new original songs and more in depth backstories on most of the characters involved. All in all, the musical is great, but that is just my opinion since I played six characters in the show.

2. Spongebob Squarepants

This is the only musical on this list that is based off a TV show. Spongebob Squarepants The Musical is fairly new to Broadway. It is still in the rehearsal phase and it is set to open on November 6th, 2017. I do not know what the plot line is for the show or whether it is going to have original songs but it is highly requested from Spongebob fans both new and old.

3. Groundhog Day

To those who do not know what Groundhog Day is about, then buckle up. The movie starred Bill Murray who plays a jerky news reporter. On Groundhog day he has to do a news report in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. That day he was exceptionally mean to his co-workers and to civilians that day. He wakes the next day to find out that he is in a time loop, and he has to relive Groundhog Day over and over until he can learn how to be kind and learn to love. The musical follows the same plot but as the movie and it includes some new original music.

4. Aladdin

This is not a list of Broadway musicals without something Disney. There are many differences between the movie and the musical. Some differences include the new character of Aladdin's mother and the removal of Abu, Aladdin's monkey sidekick. I believe the Broadway version follows the same plot as the movie just with minor tweaks and new songs.

5. The Lion King

The musical you all have been waiting for has finally arrived on this list. This musical closely follows the film that everyone loves. One of the many reasons why I like the Broadway show is the fact that they use puppets for the characters. The plot and songs are all the same as the movie version. Now there is a rumor that the reign of The Lion King on Broadway is coming to an end and being replaced with Frozen The Musical (which is still in the writing phase).

6. Newsies

I actually saw this show on Broadway. It is one of the many reasons why I want to be an actor on Broadway. This show is too great to go explain because you have to see it in person. This is based on the Disney movie which is about the paperboy strike in the late 1800's and the early 1900's.

7. Hairspray

I was surprised that this was based off a movie. I always thought it was a show than a movie. If you do not know Hairspray, it is about a young girl named Tracy who wants to be a dancer on a TV show. She realizes the African American dancers were treated poorly and she tries to desegregate the show. The Broadway show follows the movie and Tracy's mother was played by the legendary Harvey Fierstein (if you do not know, he wrote Kinky Boots, La Cage aux Folles and many other Broadway musicals).

8. Kinky Boots

Speaking of Kinky Boots, I was also surprised that this was based off a movie as well. It is based off the 2005 British movie where a man named Charlie Price inherits a shoe factory from his father after his passing. The factory has so many financial issues that Charlie had to fire 15 or so employees. A drag queen named Lola convinced Charlie to make erotic shoes in order to save the factory. The show is still on Broadway with a new cast. Charlie is now played by Brendon Urie who is the lead singer of Panic! At The Disco. The show is a must see if you enjoy fashion, musicals, and Drag Queens.

9. The Producers

This hilarious comedy tells the story of a Broadway producer who wants to put on the biggest Broadway flop so he can make a ton of money. There was a movie made in the sixties then it was made into a Broadway show which starred Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick. They both starred in the remake of The Producers as their original roles. Both the show and movie have very offensive humor like a scene having to deal with Hitler (a show called Springtime For Hitler), an entire song about showing off a girl's body and the gayest thing you will ever see in your life. All in all, it is a fantastic show.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.
