Luckily, New England is made up of smaller states that are clumped together, making it very easy to get a change of scenery. So, to help you plan your next weekend, or even day, trip, here are nine places within a three-hour driving distance of Boston that will make you want to get on the road stat.
1. Cape Cod, Mass.: 1hour 12 minutes from Boston
As one of the most iconic New England getaways, Cape Cod is known for its beautiful beaches, fresh seafood and plenty of outdoor activities. Each of its towns has something a little different to offer, giving you plenty to choose from.
2. Providence, R.I.: 55 minutes from Boston
As its state capital, Providence is a great choice for all you history buffs. Plus, you’ll notice it’s the perfect blend of city life with traditional charm.
3. The Berkshires, Mass.: 2 hour 15 minutes
This mountainous region is ideal for outdoor adventures: from skiing in the winter, to hiking in the summer, you’ll be in awe of the natural beauty.
4. Newport, R.I.: 1 hour 20 minutes from Boston
As if its impressive harbor and coastal views weren’t enough, this city is known for its spectacular Newport Mansions, many of which are now open as museums (including The Breakers, former home of the Vanderbilts, pictured above)
5. Salem, Mass.: 30 minutes from Boston
Okay, so beautiful may not be the word that comes to mind for Salem, but quaint and fascinating sure do. This city is renowned as the home of the 1692 Salem Witch Trials, and now attracts tourists for its history, its haunted hotspots and its shopping that compliments its historic identity. As an extra bonus, you can take a train to Salem in the same amount of time.
6. Mystic, Conn.: 1 hour 39 minutes from Boston
You may be familiar with this village from the classic coming-of-age movie “Mystic Pizza,” but nevertheless, Mystic on its own has plenty to offer: from its seaport to its mom-and-pop stores, it will definitely find a way into your heart.
7. Exeter, N.H.: 1 hour 5 minutes from Boston
Besides its top-notch boarding school Philips Exeter Academy, Exeter has a fun downtown area and an interesting American Independence Museum, making it a great destination for people who want to stay on their feet.
