Now that the semester has ended, everyone is looking for the best place to get the bang for your buck. Luckily, Maryland offers plenty of free (or cheap) attractions and events all throughout the state. Here are nine to consider.

1. Havre de Grace Harbor

Havre de Grace is a historical town in Harford County. Check out lighthouses, museums, walk the promenade and enjoy the water here without spending a dime. If you do wish to spend money, you can eat at the unique selection of restaurants in the town.

2. Enoch Pratt Free Library

Located in Baltimore, Maryland, the Enoch Pratt Free Library has been around since 1886 and is free for everyone who visits. Established by philanthropist Enoch Pratt, the library offers workshops and other events to its citizens and is a breathtaking visual experience.

3. Ocean City

While it certainly costs money to stay in one of Ocean City's many hotels, if you live close to the beach, a day trip is certainly an option. The beach and boardwalk are free to explore, and there are a number of free events at this location, including festivals, parades and art centers.

4. Schook 33 Art Center

For 30 years, School 33 Art Center has provided free exhibits, workshops and events to the Baltimore community. The center has made outreach efforts for neighboring schools and is open from Wednesday to Saturday.

5. National Harbor

The National Harbor, located in Baltimore, Maryland, is full of attractions, including historic ships and heritage area trails. The National Aquarium, Maryland Science Center and kid's museum, Port Discovery, are located in this convenient hub! Free events regularly occur here as well.

6. Rocks State Park

Rocks State Park in Jarrettsville offers 855 acres of forestry and trails. The most famous attraction, the King and Queen seat, is a 190-foot structure was once a gathering place for local Native Americans.

7. Brookside Gardens

With 50 acres of display garden, two conservatories and classes for adults and children, Brookside is a gorgeous, public park in Montgomery. Inside is an aquatic garden, a butterfly garden, a Japanese-style garden and many other themed gardens.

8. Eastern Shore

Maryland's Eastern Shore is a region with much to offer. The lower part offers Pork festivals, Springfest and carnivals. Events with fresh fruit and food from local farms are frequent in the middle area, and the upper part offers tea and music festivities.

9. Chesapeake Bay

While the Chesapeake Bay is great for its visuals, it also harbors an array of activities. These include conservation efforts, food and wine festivals, First Fridays and Second Saturdays.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
