President Obama recently Veto’d a bill that would allow families affected by 9/11 to sue the Saudi Arabian government. This veto was overturned by a large majority vote in both the House and the Senate. This is the first overturned veto of Obama’s presidency.
President Obama has successfully convinced both the house and the senate to vote in his favor for the past eight years. This raises the inherent question, “What does Obama know that he cannot say to justify his decision to veto this bill”? When these families go to court they will be suing the government of Saudi Arabia, essentially for information. Was Obama’s decision to veto the bill strategic for foreign policy reasons or is he trying to prevent information from getting out?
These families suing the government could negatively affect the relationship between Saudi and the United States. However, if it means the United States, as a whole, gets final closure on the exact chronology of the September 11th attacks… it could be well worth it.
