8123 Means Everything to Me

8123. To many, it’s just random numbers but those random numbers have meaning to many people; random or not. Those numbers represent home whether you’ve actually gone to the parking lot where those numbers are placed in Phoenix, Arizona or not it’s still home. Home doesn’t have to be somewhere physical, home is somewhere where you feel safe, comfortable, accepted, and loved. If it wasn’t for a band called The Maine then 8123 would indeed be just some random numbers there would be no home for many lost souls. 8123 is more than just a collection of artists who enjoy making music, it’s so much more. 8123 is knowing that you are not the only one in the world who feels the way you do; we all have demons and uneasy thoughts and 8123 and the music that comes from the artist involved gives me and many others comfort in knowing that we’re not in this alone. It’s also knowing that you have friends in all parts of the world. Without this wonderful community, I wouldn’t be able to say that I have friends in Sweden, California, Florida, Arizona, Tennessee and so many other amazing places. 8123 is also experiencing new things with amazing and sometimes new people.

8123 is driving anywhere from an hour to flying across the country just to see the inspirational, amazing, genuine bands that are a part of it, play songs that mean the world to you. 8123 is crying when you say goodbye to your friends that you’ve met along the way because the distance is a bitch and you don’t know when you’ll see them again. 8123 includes all the tears of sadness and joy, the soreness in your stomach from laughing too much, the stiffness in your limbs from driving or flying for too long, the sweaty palms that you get from talking to John, Jared, Pat, Kennedy or Garrett, and it’s the lost voice the day after screaming your lungs out to a song that means everything to you. Describing 8123 and the feeling that it brings is so difficult to put into words. 8123 is my home away from home; it’s all my friends who are there for me when my other friends can’t, it’s family that is closer to me than my actual family. John O'Callaghan, lead singer of The Maine wrote: “It's about a number you can't really explain but you don't really have to because the people you love already feel it too.”

By the time that this is published I’ll be in Phoenix Arizona watching one of my favorite bands for the past eight years celebrate ten years of being a band play at 8123 fest with someone of my favorite people. 8123 is a part of me and 8123 means everything to me!

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
