Let's be real. We've all spent ridiculous amounts of money while at school. Late night Insomnia cookie orders, surged uber fares and cyber money online shopping expenses. We're all pretty much broke and it's hard to manage academics while also working, so getting a job isn't ideal. However, there are multiple ways to save money throughout the semester and some are ways you would've never thought of!
1. Venmo
This app is one of the greatest inventions of our time. It’s a mobile payment app that allows users to transfer money between one another, just by using their phones. You can link your phone contacts or Facebook friends so that you can easily find the person you want to send money to. By using this app, you can easily split a bill, pay your share of an Uber ride or having someone simply pay you back. Also, if you’re short on cash while everyone else is paying by bills, you can have someone pay for you and you can easily send them money through Venmo. Instead of worrying about the money people owe you or the money you owe to others, you can use this app so that everything is always equally paid for. This will help you save money since now, you’re never the one paying for everything or never have to worry if you paid your friends!
2. Poshmark
Another app that is tremendously useful is Poshmark. Basically, you can upload photos and descriptions of clothing you want to sell and you’ll almost always get instant feedback on your products. By selling old clothes that you no longer wear, you’ll have extra money in your bank account for weekend spending. The perk of this app is that the company only takes 20% of what you sell your item for, pays for the delivery charges AND allows you to put your products up for free, unlike eBay or Amazon!
3. Rent Textbooks
Although this is a gimme, I decided to buy a few books rather than just rent all of them and I regret that. It’s so much easier to rent a textbook for 1/4th of the price and return it 4 months after. Why spend the full $100 on a book you’re barely going to use (let’s be real, our textbooks just catch dust throughout the semester)? By renting all of your textbooks, you’re going to instantly save hundreds of dollars in the beginning of each term.
4. Use Student Discounts
Whenever I go shopping, I always ask the cashier if they offer a student discount. Stores like J.Crew, Topshop/Topman and Asos all offer percentage discounts on any order! Even if you only save 5-10 dollars, money is money. Also, when you’re out to eat you even can save money. Almost all Chipotle restaurants offer a free drink with your order when you show them your student ID. Why pay the extra $3 for a Sprite if you can get it for free?
5. Share Netflix accounts
Although it’s nice to have your own account and your own ‘my list’ on Netflix, sharing an account with your roommate will save you money monthly. Instead of paying $7.99 for a one screen plan, get the $8.99 plan for two screens. That way, you and your roommate can continue to enjoy binge watching your shows and avoiding all responsibilities by only paying $4.50 each a month!
6. Starbucks refill
Since we’re all college students, coffee is part of our morning, afternoon, night, midnight, and 3am routine. If you buy regular coffee or teas at Starbucks, you get free refills! Whenever you’re working late and are considering getting 2-3 coffees, keep in mind that you don’t have to pay for it each time. Just get the refill!
7. Free events around campus
I remember at every orientation, all the students would tell me to always go to free events on campus for one reason and one reason only: free food. I seriously thought they were kidding but I was wrong. We all get sick of generic dining hall food that leads us to eat either cereal or a bagel every night. So, in order to save money and not go to Whole Foods every night, check out the free events on campus so that you can get free buffet style food.
8. Borrow clothes
“I have nothing to wear!!!” is something we all say practically every weekend. I’m guilty of this and I typically would go buy a new outfit for every new occasion. However, that wasn’t smart on my part because I would impulse buy clothes that I literally only wore once. Instead, I’ve started to raid my friends’ closets and they’ve started raiding mine. This way, we can all Instagram without having to worry about posting another picture in the same shirt.
Basically, you can save a couple of bucks here and there and you can even make money too. Keep these tips in mind so that you'll have a couple of extra hundreds in your bank account.
